2020.10.19 08:00 Jrubas Rugaru: Chapter One

First chapter of a longer story.

****

Jeffery Morgan stared absently out the wet back window of his Uncle Tim’s station wagon, his mind in turmoil. His delicate chin rested in his upturned palm and his clear hazel eyes swirled with secret worry. A green rucksack containing all of his most important possessions sat on his lap, its weight comforting, like a hug.
Fifteen and bookish with lank brown hair and clad in a maroon zip-up hoodie, Jeff liked to think he was smarter than the average kid...because that was the only advantage he had. He was tall and willowy, limbs too long, and the polar opposite of athletic. He didn’t like sports or roughhousing, and video games failed to hold his interest for very long. He wasn’t like his peers and both he and they knew it: Some picked on him, but most left him alone...totally and soul-crushingly alone.
He didn’t have any real life friends, but he did have friends online. He sometimes wrote fan fiction for a cartoon show that he no longer watched but once loved, and through that he met a group of guys on Discord that he really got along with. They were slightly older and edgy - they laughed about Nazis in voice chat and called everyone they didn’t like the N-word or the F-word. Jeff didn’t really like that, but it’s not like they were really racist or anything. Like one of them once pointed out to him, they were teenagers rebelling against their middle class liberal parents, so what else were they going to be but dumb and racist?
Even with them, though, he sometimes got lonely. If he wasn’t reading or writing, he’d start to feel his isolation the way one might feel the flu or a toothache.
It was all the worse because he couldn’t just go out and meet people if he wanted; he was shy and self-conscious, which made meeting people hard.
He sighed.
Next to him, his sister Kelsy folded her arms over her chest and fixed the back of Aunt Margaret’s headrest with a petulant expression. Twelve and bratty, she wore a sleeveless dress and sandals despite the November chill and her dirty blonde hair in a sideways ponytail that she thought made her look fashionable but actually made her look like something from the nineties. Like him, her features were soft and her eyes light. Her pert nose was different from his pug, and her lips were just a little poutier, as they should have been.
Up front, Uncle Tim fiddled with the radio and Aunt Margaret endlessly scrolled through her iPhone.
They were currently making their way through downtown Keyser, a working class community perched on the muddy banks of the Potomac River separating West Virginia and Maryland. Antiquated brick structures dating back to the 1880s lined the slanted streets and the spires of the stately Potomac State College building loomed high over town. Rain hissed on the pavements and traffic moved at a crawl. Jeff craned his neck to see, and spotted a crumbling concrete bridge spanning the gap between states. A confused tangle of train tracks followed the shore, old tankers and rail cars sitting motionless along its length, their bodies rusting like unburied skeletons in the rain.
Westernport, Maryland, their final destination, lay ten miles downstream, a collection of comfortable houses, narrow lanes, and shady trees edging one of the many bends in the Potomac’s course. Jeff’s grandparents lived there, and now, after the accident, that’s where he and Kelsy would live too.
Thinking of the wreck that killed his parents turned Jeff’s stomach. They were out celebrating Dad’s Big Promotion at work. It started to rain, much like it was now, and on their way home, Dad lost control of the car. Jeff’s morbid curiosity - a longstanding trait that had never served him well - got the better of him and he looked up news reports online. The car skidded, struck the retaining wall, flipped, then burst into flames. The police said they died instantly, but Jeff wondered if they did, or if that was just another empty platitude meant to lessen the sting, like they’re in a better place.
Most words of consolation are. Grown ups tell you and each other whatever they can to ease the pain, whether they actually believe it themselves or not. People, Jeff had already learned, almost always prefer pretty lies to ugly truths, and if you give them a choice, like that guy in The Matrix with a red pill in one hand and a blue in the other, they’ll go for the lie and clutch it like a scared little kid with a teddy bear.
He was no different when you got right down to it.
Uncle Tim settled for a station playing Taylor Swift and Jeff grimaced. He didn’t like Taylor Swift, or most music for that matter.
On the other side of the bridge, the highway curved up and out of sight. Uncle Tim turned left and followed another road matching the swollen river bend-for-bend. Kelsey glared at Aunt Margaret’s seat and impatiently tapped her foot. She didn’t want to move to Westernport. Unlike Jeff, she had friends back home in Franklin. Her life couldn’t be picked up and moved as easily as his. Sometimes, Jeff envied her.
“You guys excited?” Uncle Tim asked. He was a pair of limpid brown eyes in the rearview mirror.
“No,” Kelsey said before Jeff could reply.
Uncle Tim shrugged one shoulder, at a loss for how to reply. He and Aunt Margaret didn’t have kids and they always struck Jeff as uncomfortable around them. “You gotta give it time,” he said. “You’ll settle in, make new friends, and before you know it, you’ll love it there.”
“No I won’t,” she said sullenly.
Jeff didn’t think he would either, but he didn’t like Franklin, and if his memory was correct, he didn’t like Parkersburg before it.
They lapsed into silence and Jeff vacantly regarded the river, flashes of brown and white peeking through gnarled trees. A sheer rock-face loomed over the highway on the right, putting Jeff in mind of ancient ruins, and the blacktop angled up with the terrain. Now the river was below and the misty, time worn mountains of West Virginia directly across. From here, Jeff could just make out Westernport in the distance, white clapboard buildings clustered among dense stands of trees. He picked out the green roofed steeple of the Methodist church on Front Street, named (presumably) because it fronts the river.
A mile outside of town, a foul smell crept into the car, and Jeff’s nose wrinkled.
Kelsey sniffed the air and threw her head back with an exasperated groan.
The highway wound out of the hills and hit a straightaway. A brown sign with gold writing stood on the right. WELCOME TO WESTERNPORT, MD. The smell was stronger now, burning the insides of Jeff’s nose and sending his stomach rocking like the pitching deck of a ship in rough swells. He looked off to the left, and there, screened behind barren trees and a chain-link fence, was the source.
The sewage treatment facility.
Big, boxy, and drab, like a prison, it sat on a rounded peninsula jutting into the river, thick white smoke billowing from its single funnel. Kelsey pinched her nose and Jeff breathed through his mouth. The stench produced by the plant - which treated wastewater and sewage from Westernport, Luke, and Piedmont - permeated every inch of town, as inescapable as sand in the desert; shutting windows didn’t help, spraying Fabreeze didn’t help, nothing helped except for getting far, far away. No matter where you went, no matter what you did, the cloying whiff of shit would forever haunt the inside of your nose.
“I don’t wanna live here,” Kelsey whined. She sounded like she was going to break down crying.
Uncle Tim chuckled knowingly. He and Dad grew up here, so he understood. Even so, Jeff detected a mocking inflection - he, at least, got to go back home to Moorefield. “It’s not like this all the time,” he said. “Only certain parts of the day.”
“That’s still too much,” Aunt Margaret said and waved her hand in front of her face as if to dispel the odor.
“It’s bracing,” Uncle Tim said dismissively, “puts some hair on your chest.”
Aunt Maragret sneered in distaste, and he erupted in hearty, not entirely good-natured laughter.
In town, Westernport Road turns into Church Street. A gas station, a McDonald’s, and a Dollar General crowded the left flank and a gentle hill topped will houses fell back from the right. Near the river, tumbledown row houses with dirty siding overlooked 1st Street, and closer, Westernport Elementary, an archaic two story brick deal with big windows, huddled where it had since the twenties. Because of the village’s cramped layout, the houses on Church Street were virtually on top of the road, front yards consisting of cracked sidewalk or, if you were really lucky, a sliver of grass just wide enough to attract fallen leaves.
A diner, a bank, a barber shop, and a hardware store gathered around a four way intersection comprised Downtown. Ahead, Church Street crossed over George’s Creek, which bisects Westernport before filtering into the Potomac, and slithered off into the highlands to the north. On the left, Victory Post Road entered the neighboring town of Piedmont, West Virginia, by way of a bridge with no name.
Uncle Tim turned right, taking them deeper into town, and Jeff took a deep, calming breath. The sooner they got there, the sooner he’d have to start school, and of all the things he wasn’t looking forward to in the coming weeks and months, that was number one. On the very first day, he would walk in there an outsider, and everyone would know he didn’t belong, that he wasn’t one of them.
He didn’t want that.
He wanted to be invisible.
Victory Post Road weaved through the rest of Westernport. Jeff spotted the library, a Lutheran church, an auto shop - big roll-top doors open to reveal the shadowy interior of a garage - and the American Legion Post 155.
Just across the town limits, Uncle Tim turned into a dirt driveway wedged between two hillocks. At the top, Grandma and Grandpa’s house, a squat American Foursquare with red siding and a pitched roof over the porch, occupied a wide clearing ringed by woodland. Smoke drifted from the chimney and warm, inviting light shone in the first floor windows, lending the place a rustic charm that put Jeff at ease...even if only a little.
The tires spun and squelched in the sodden yard, and Uncle Tim gunned the engine to keep from getting stuck. “Every time it rains or snows, this place turns into a swamp,” he commented as he killed the engine.
“Didn’t your dad say he was going to put gravel down or something?” Aunt Maragret asked.
Uncle Tim snorted. “He’s been saying that for twenty years.” He opened the door and climbed out, and Aunt Margaret followed.
Jeff lingered a moment, delaying the inevitable, then got out himself; thin drops of cold rain beat down on his head and shoulders, dampening his hair and hoodie. Kelsey, arms still defiantly crossed, sat where she was, brows furrowed stormily. His first instinct was to leave her alone, but now that Mom and Dad were gone, he was sort of responsible for her. “You coming?” he asked.
“No,” she spat.
The venom in her voice was strong enough to kill a grown man ten times over. Jeff’s resolve wavered and he almost walked away. “You have to,” he said.
Uncle Tim and Aunt Margaret stood by the trunk, Aunt Margaret with her head ducked against the rain and Uncle Tim grabbing Kelsey’s bags.
“I don’t want to,” she said, “I wanna go back to Franklin.”
He couldn’t believe he was saying this - well, thinking it - but he did too. “I know, but you can’t.”
She drew a deep breath and pushed it back out again in a savage rush.
Jeff opened his mouth, then reconsidered what he was going to say. Uncle Tim doesn’t want us so it’s this or an orphanage. He glanced at his uncle through the rear window, then leaned in. “We don’t have a choice,” he said, “we can’t stay with Uncle Tim.”
“I could have stayed with Kendall.”
Kendall Kramer was Kelsey’s best friend. They did everything together, from putting on make-up to talking back to the teacher, and leaving her behind hurt Kelsey more than she would ever admit.
Jeff was starting to get annoyed, but forced himself to be patient. Losing Mom and Dad was just as hard on her as it was on him, if not harder. “No, you couldn’t have. Her parents didn’t want you living with them, no one wants you living with them but Grandma and Grandpa.”
That came out much, much harsher than he meant, and Kelsey flinched. Great job. You should be a councillor one day. Why yes, little Susie, your mommy probably does hate your guts. “Me too,” he quickly added. “We just have to make the best of it. I don’t want to either but…what else am I going to do?”
She turned her head pointedly away, and Jeff rolled his eyes. Whatever.
Slinging his bag over his shoulder, he slammed the door and went around to the trunk. The mud sucked at his Vans and he almost stepped out of them.
Grandpa had come outside and stood on the porch, a cup of coffee clutched in one hand. Tall and lanky with white hair and a Wayatt Earp mustache, he wore a thermal undershirt tucked into dark brown trousers. His face was rugged and weatherbeaten, but unlined, and his blue eyes were sharp and crystal clear. He was sixty-six but if he dyed his hair, he could pass for fifty, maybe even forty-five.
He flashed a tight smile and nodded, and Jeff nodded back. Grandpa was what the books might call a salt-of-the-earth type. He worked at the paper mill in Lucas for thirty years, voted Democrat until they got too far left, and raised chickens and pigs out back (today only a few hens and a single rooster remain). He looked tough because he was, and he looked mean but wasn’t.
Uncle Tim slammed the trunk lid and, with a bulging bag in each hand, he struggled to the porch, Aunt Margaret trailing behind. Jeff glanced at the car to see if Kelsey was going to get out, and when she didn’t, he went on without her. Fine, he thought, be that way.
“What’cha got in there?” Grandpa asked and nodded to the bags.
With a grunt of exertion, Uncle Tim sat them on the top step and leaned back as if to crack a troublesome muscle. “Kelsey’s stuff,” he said. “She brought everything we could fit.”
Because Uncle Tim only had the car, Jeff and Kelsey couldn’t bring much. Grandpa was going to hire a moving truck to get the rest and bring it out. Kelsey, laboring under the delusion that whatever she didn’t pack was going to be thrown in the garbage (or worse, given to charity) stuffed every single outfit, plush teddy bear, shoe, and keepsake into her bag that she could.
Jeff came up the stairs to get out of the rain and Grandpa looked at him. “That all you got?” he asked.
“Yeah, I don’t bring anything else.”
The corners of Granda’s mouth turned slightly up in one of his muted quarter-smiles that you’d be forgiven for mistaking for gas. “There you go,” he said, “a real man travels light.”
“A real man helps his uncle with heavy things,” Uncle Tim put in. “Grab one of these bags, will you?”
Jeff picked one up, and his arm nearly came out of his socket. Uncle Tim wasn’t lying, it was heavy.
Grandpa scurried ahead, opened the door, and stepped aside. Jeff stopped, got a better grip, and fought the bag across the threshold.
The living room was a pit of gloom, lit only by the blue glow of an ancient TV and the light falling in from the kitchen. The local news was on, a weatherman standing before a map of the area and chattering about low pressure systems and umbrellas, and metal clanging sounded from the kitchen. Jeff took a deep breath through his nose then coughed. Moth balls, old people, and rump roast.
To his left, an armchair and a canned rocker bookended a wing-back loveseat with an Afhgan draped over the back. Framed photos dotted the green-papered walls. Knick-knacks, doilies, and ornamental plates packed a scarred oak-wood hutch that looked as old as Grandpa, if not older.
A broad set of oaken stairs to Jeff’s right provided access to the second floor. Being careful not to knock any of the pictures down or trip on the runner, Jeff carried the bag to the top. The hall was pitch black and he stopped to feel along the wall for the lightswitch. He’d been coming here every summer since he was a kid and still had trouble finding it.
When he got it, dim yellow light filled the hall, chasing the shadows to the corners, where they nested and plotted their return. Up here, the walls were split in two by brown chair rail molding, beige paper with a floral pattern on top and wood paneling below. A vase full of artificial flowers stood on an end table in a little alcove, and scuffed wood flooring creaked under Jeff’s weight. The spicy scent of age seasoned the warm air and black and white photos of relatives Jeff had never met stared down at him as he passed.
There were three rooms up here. Grandma and Grandpa’s was at the end of the hall and Jeff and Kelsey’s on either side. At Kelsey’s door, he turned the knob and went inside.
Back home, Kelsey had a TV and a computer in her room, ditto Jeff, but here the accommodations were little more Spartan: A single neatly made bed, a dresser, and a rocking chair by the window. Wan light fell through lacy white curtains and suffused the darkness. A florid landscape panting hung above the bed and a full length mirror took up one dusty corner.
With only her phone to keep her occupied, Kelsey was going to be bored.
And when Kelsey was bored, she bellyached.
Leaving the bag on the bed, he went downstairs. Uncle Tim and Aunt Maragret stood in the foyer with Grandpa, and Grandma doted on Kelsey, who finally decided to join them. Grandma brushed her fingers through the little girl’s hair and cooed like she was the most adorable thing ever. “It’s so good to see you,” Grandma said.
“You too,” Kelsey said, partly to be polite and partly honest.
Grandma unhanded her and turned to Jeff. “You get taller every time I see you,” she said and held out her arms.
A short, rotund woman with long, messy hair the color of burnished steel and a pleasant face, she wore a red flannel shirt over a billowy black T-shirt that rustled with her movements. She believed in comfort over style and preferred men’s clothing to women’s because they fit better. Her hands were calloused and mannish from years of carpentry and tending the land, and her arms, when she wrapped them around Jeff’s lithe frame, thrummed with power like high tension wires. All those decades of chopping wood really paid off, he guessed.
“I’m only six,” Jeff demurred.
“Almost as tall as your grandfather,” she said.
“6’2,” Grandpa said. He looked at Uncle Tim, who barely reached 5’7. “It skips a generation.”
Uncle Tim snorted. “At least I don’t have to duck under everything.”
“You have to stretch,” Grandpa said. He patted Uncle Tim’s belly. “Think you’d have less of this.”
‘I’m saving up for the winter,” Uncle Tim said.
“Must gonna be a long winter,” Grandpa said.
After Uncle Tim and Aunt Margaret left, Jeff took his own bag to his room and sat heavily on the edge of the bed. Like Kelsey’s, it was sparsely furnished with a bed, a dresser, a high boy, a wardrobe, and a desk and chair set. Jeff drew a deep breath and looked around, taking in every detail. He loved his grandparents and their house was a place of good feelings and good memories, but he didn't want to live there.
As filled with love as it might be, it wasn’t home.
Home was his parents, home was his room in Franklin, home was the lax rules and minimal oversight Mom and Dad employed. His grandparents weren’t overbearing, but they were different, older, and their ways weren’t his parents’.
He’d just have to get used to it, though.
Because his parents were dead and from now on, this place, this town, was his life.
Like he told Kelsey in the car, they just had to make the best of it.
And he honestly believed that.
But the question was: Could he?
And for that, he had no answer.
***
Robert Dunham, chief of the Westernport Police Department, started Thursday morning as he did any other: With whiskey, coffee, and a visit to Faye’s Diner.
A tall, lank man with black hair beginning to gray at the temples and icy blue eyes that belied his genuine warmth, Dunham had lived his entire forty-three years in Westernport, and had been eating breakfast at Faye’s every day since he was fifteen. It was a ritual for him, and if Dunham was anything, it was a creature of habit. He woke at the same time every morning, went to bed at the same time each night, and did the same things he’d been doing for twenty years in exactly the same way.
His philosophy was this: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Change isn’t a bad thing, but too many people these days just aren’t happy with consistency. With all the computers, Facebook, and iPhones, the human attention span had shrunk and now everyone had ADHD and just can’t sit still. Dunham’s parents, like many of the old timers inhabiting the hills around Westernport, were livestock farmers, simple people with simple ways and conservative values. They went to bed at the same time every night, had dinner at the same time every evening, and watched the same TV programs every week. They rarely deviated from course, and alterations came few and far between. For example, Dunham’s folks had the same living room set for forty years. It was plaid, threadbare, and ugly, but comforting too, because while everything outside changed, it - and everything else in the house - remained the same, an island of stability in the shifting sands of time.
He didn’t always feel that way. When he was younger, Westernport bored him to tears; outside of mudding, swimming in the river, and watching the mountains erode, there wasn’t much to do. If you had a car, you could drive the twenty miles to Cumberland where there were restaurants, a movie theater, the YMCA, and the mall, but if not, you were pretty much out of luck. As a kid, he wanted action, adventure, big cities, all the things you’d expect a rural farm boy to pine for.
But he never got them. He stayed right here in town, married, joined the department, divorced, and passed his days doing his best Andy Griffith - which was pretty good, if he said so himself.
Like the fabled town of Mayberry, Westernport was clean, polite, and safe. No one left their doors unlocked - even Aunt Bea wouldn’t do that - but if they forgot to before turning in, well, chances are nothing would happen anyway.
Unfortunately, that was beginning to change. Meth production (and consumption) was quickly becoming a popular pastime in the area just like it was in small towns across the nation. Last year, the state police raided a house on Pine Street and seized enough meth to power a fleet of truckers for a month, and the year before that, a tweaker attacked someone at Dell’s Tavern and nearly killed him. Dunham likened it to cancer. Right now, they were in the early stages, but give it time and it would spread.
Another sign of the times, he supposed.
Whether change was good or not, it was beginning to creep in like the rising tide, and sometimes, it left him feeling lost.
That made his daily visits to Faye’s all the sweeter.
Situated on the corner of Church Street and Victory Post Road, Faye’s was housed in a converted rail car, long and narrow with big plate-glass windows and a chrome finish. Neon letters spelled DINER across the roof like a beacon to the hungry, and a special board by the door listed all of the things you could buy inside...which wasn’t much. Faye kept the menu simple and cheap. It wasn’t fancy food, but it was good, stuck to your ribs, and didn’t break your wallet.
Just past eight, Dunham pulled into the gravel parking lot and frowned at the pick-up truck in his usual spot. Such a small thing and inconsequential, but it still nagged him as he drew alongside it and parked. His greatest flaw, his ex-wife Jeni said, was being “OCD.” He liked things done a certain way and when something wasn’t the way it ought to be, it bothered him, like a loose pebble in his shoe. He didn’t see that as a flaw, but he could admit that he took it a little too far sometimes.
Obviously, or else Jeni wouldn’t have left him.
Shoving those thoughts away lest they sour his mood, he killed the engine and got out. Cold drops of rain pelted his green canvas coat and mud squelched beneath his meticulously polished boots. Inside, a lunch counter flanked the back wall and booths with red vinyl upholstery lined the front. A Pac-Man cabinet that hadn’t worked in twenty years sat next to the bathrooms, and the warm smells of sizzling bacon, frying eggs, and hashbrowns drifted from the order window. A fat man in a green vest and a John Deere cap with a mesh back took up one of the stools, his hairy ass crack bared to the world, and a waitress in a pink uniform refilled his coffee, then went to the window, where a plateful of pancakes waited.
Dunham unzipped his coat, brushed the hem behind his gun, and sat, leaving two spaces between him and the trucker. “What’d you say, Curt?” he asked.
Curt Fields glanced at him, then grinned when he realized who it was. “Hey, Bobby,” he said, “cleaning up the streets?”
Another lifer - one who had grown up in Westernport and was fated to die there as well - Curt drove for P.H. Anderson Trucking out of Cumberland. He and Dunham went to school together and were good friends in seventh and eighth grade. They drifted apart in high school. There was no reason...no bad blood, no umbridge...it just happened. “Not on an empty stomach,” Dunham said archly.
The waitress came back, grabbed a mug, and sat it in front of Dunham in one fluid motion, as though she had been doing this for thirty-five years. To be fair, she had. Tall with bushy blonde hair streaked through with gray, Maud Anson was like Faye’s itself: A permanent fixture by which you could set your watch. Deep lines radiated from the corners of her mouth and eyes and her skin had gradually taken the appearance of cracked leather. She had to be in her sixties, but Dunham didn’t know and had never asked: It’s not polite to ask a woman her age.
“Mornin’, Bob,” she said and filled the cup.
“Morning, Maud.”
“Usual?”
Dunham mulled that over a moment. Creature of habit though he may be, he did enjoy occasionally mixing things up. Normally, he had an egg (sunny side up), two strips of bacon, two sausage links, and a piece of white toast, lightly burned. It was good, it filled him up, and that’s all that mattered to him. These days, he was starting to think Jeni was right.
You’re too predictable, she huffed once, it’s irritating.
In his defense, Jeni was one of those people who fetishize leaving their small town. When they first started dating in high school, they both wanted to get the hell out of Westernport, and some evenings, they’d park on Prospect Hill, lay in the bed of Dunham’s battered hand-me-down Ford, and gaze up at the stars while talking about all the places they wanted to go. Dunham eventually grew up and got practical, Jeni didn’t; she was a near forty-year-old woman with stars in her eyes and still dreaming of New York City, as though it weren’t an overtaxed, anti-cop hell hole.
She hated the mundane and the predictable...and unfortunately, he was both of those things.
Maud was looking at him funny, and he sighed. “Switch out the sausage for grits,” he said.
Nodding, she jotted his order down in her notepad, ripped it out, and stuck it to the wheel.
While he waited, Dunham sipped coffee and went through his mental to-do list. The dining room filled by degrees until every seat was taken and the roaring din of three dozen voices talking at once choked the air. Willey Harper, Westernport’s resident drunk, sat on Curt’s left and conversed with Dan Strode, the minister. Tall and willowy with a shock of white hair, an unkempt beard, and perpetually bleary eyes, Willey was the janitor at the high school before he hurt his back and went on disability. For nearly ten years, he’d been cashing other people’s tax dollars and drinking himself stupid. Dan, short and pudgy with glasses and a combover, had conducted every burial, marriage, and Baptism in Westernport since George Bush Sr. was president.
After eating, Dunham laid a twenty down on the counter and left. The rain had slackened and a chilly breeze washed over him. He zipped his jacket up, ducked his head, and went to the car. Behind the wheel, he started the engine, backed up, and swung right. A truck hauling timber blasted by on Victory Post Road, and Dunham’s eyes went to the rusted chains keeping the logs together. Ever since Final Destination 2, those trucks made him nervous. All it took was one weak link and BAM, Armageddon in downtown Westernport.
Turning left, he drove the three blocks to the police station, a modern brick-and-glass building on Church Street with a blue awning over the door. He parked in the side lot, cut the engine, and got out.
In the lobby, he wiped his feet on the carpet and shook himself dry like a fussy dog. Tammy Reid, the secretary/dispatcher, sat behind a counter shielded from the public by durable plexiglass, her plain face buried in paperwork. A man-sized door to its right provided access to the squad room, and Durham went through.
Cluttered desks dotted a wide, tile-floored room, and metal filing cabinets stood sentry against dingy white walls. Billy Norton, the station rookie, got up from his terminal and carried a sheet of paper over to the fax machine. Tall and thin with blonde hair, his brown uniform fit him perfectly, but still seemed somehow too big, as though he were a kid playing dress up and not a real cop at all. The illusion was strongest when he laughed.
Mike Van Scoy came out of the break room with a styrofoam cup of coffee and took a long, languid sip, looking for all the world like a man who wasn’t on the clock. A ten year veteran of the force, he was Billy’s opposite in every way: Short, olive complexioned, and cynical to the point of parody. Crime wasn’t ubitious to Westernport the way it was to larger towns, but listening to Mike talk, you’d think he’d seen everything from serial killers to terrorism. In actuality, the worst thing he ever saw was -
Dunham’s lips settled into a sour frown.
“Morning, Chief,” Mike said.
“Morning,” Dunham said. Mike fell in next to him. “Anything exciting happen?”
Mike worked the overnight shift along with Gavin Holmes. “Just Craig Donner beating his girlfriend up again.”
Dunham made a disgusted noise in the back of his throat. Every town over a certain size has its designated Bad Boy, and Craig Donner had been Westernport’s since he was fifteen. A few years older than Dunham, he started small, egging windows and fighting, then graduated to theft, assault, and manufacture and sale of meth. Willey Harper might be the town drunk, but Craig Donner wasn’t far behind, and whereas Willey was a happy drunk who didn’t bother anyone, Craig got mean. In the nearly twenty years Dunham had been with the department, he ran Craig in on thirteen different occasions, five of them for slapping his girlfriend, Candy, around.
“Is he in a cell?” Dunham asked. There were ten holding cells in the basement, all of them empty as of yesterday afternoon.
Mike shook his head. “Nah, Candy begged me not to so I left him.”
That was Candy alright. When Craig got liquored up and started hitting her, she called, then when it came time to put him in the back of the car, she went to pieces. Dunham didn’t believe in victim blaming, but Candy had every opportunity to get away from Craig and be done with it, but she never took it.
Hard to feel sorry for someone being bitten by a rabid dog when they refuse to leave its kennel.
“Anything else?” Dunham asked.
“No, sir,” Mike said and took a sip.
“Alright, you can go home.”
Mike nodded and rushed off, and Dunham went into his office. A small but tidy space with blue carpet, white walls, and a large oak desk that gleamed in the overhead lights, it was an oasis of order and stability and here, surrounded by plaques, certificates, and commendations from the state (some signed by the governor himself), Dunham found the peace that he had long missed at home.
Sitting, he powered on his computer, then slipped a glossy photograph from the desk’s center drawer. A pretty girl about sixteen smiled up at him, her blonde hair spilling over her shoulder like waves of wheat and her crystal blue eyes still like mountain lakes. The atmosphere darkened with tension and Dunham’s lips screwed up in a puckered grimace.
Veronica Nicely was three weeks shy of her seventeenth birthday when someone killed her in September. Her body was found in a farmer’s field west of town. She was fully clothed and face down, arms and legs splayed like the broken appendages of a discarded mannequin. Her chest and stomach had been slashed with razor sharp talons and her entrails fell onto the ground with a sickening wet plop when the medical examiner turned her over. Shedded fur salted her tacky skin and the ground around her.
Dunham concluded that she was attacked by either a large dog or by the wolves who lived in the surrounding hills.
Then the M.E. found the bite marks on her legs and inner thighs.
They were human.
Later on, the M.E. ascertained that the other wounds were made with a razor, not claws. They’re too clean, he said and traced one with his gloved pointer finger. Claw marks are messy, they tear the flesh. These are clean and precise.
The killer wanted to make it look like an animal attack and did such a good job it fooled Dunham. If it weren’t for modern forensics, they might have gotten away with it.
In the near two months since, Dunham had been following leads, asking questions, and compiling evidence...of which there wasn’t much. Veronica was pretty, popular, and kind; she never got into trouble, didn’t have a boyfriend, and didn’t drink or use drugs. At first, Dunham surmised that she was known to the killer, but by now, he had to admit that it was probably random, the work of an itinerant killer just passing through, here and gone like a shadow in the night.
That nagged him. Having a cold case on his hands triggered his OCD and left him feeling restless. Thinking of her...a bright and vivacious girl with a promising future snatched rudely away...pissed him off. Her killer was out there right this very second while she lay under six feet of dirt in Mount Carmel. The unfairness of it all weighed down on Dunham’s shoulders and if he wasn’t careful, it would start to consume him.
“We’ll find him,” he promised, and the croak of his voice in the silence disturbed him. This was one of his daily rituals, soothing in its monotony. At this point, he didn’t know if they’d catch her killer or not, but as long as he was out there, Dunham had hope.
Returning the photo to the drawer, Dunham logged onto his computer and started his day.

2020.10.11 01:19 forestcabin123k Bridezilla Karen ends up looking like a pauper at her own wedding

I (F48) have known “Pat” (F48) for decades. As far as I can remember, she was fixated on having 5 children and a picket fence dream life. I slowly cut ties with her in college because she was an opportunist and I didn’t trust her. She is both manipulative and forceful. Her idea of cute rubs me the wrong way. Pat likes to walk like a penguin when she wants to elicit pity, and she usually does this when she wants to evoke the underdog narrative. I’ve never seen someone act so despicable and ridiculous at the same time.
I moved on with my life. Happily got rid of her for years. Pat eventually found me on facebook. I accepted her friend request out of politeness.
Pat has become the epitome of a permissive mother. Her (5) kids do as they please and she never calls them out. She tried to force a relationship between me and her daughters and made them call me Auntie. Pat tried to drop them at my house uninvited. Her phone calls were insistent, she tried to monopolize my time and she began to show up at my job. I created some boundaries so she tried to find loopholes. It was a nightmare.
My husband and I hosted a party for the community center (not the real name) new members. The community center is actually a very informal initiative and my husband and I mainly serve the homeless population. We prefer to help strangers instead of catering to potentially narcissistic acquaintances. We don't mind lending a hand but we have encountered truly dishonest choosing beggars.
There are other services, like one of the members who helps women get their wedding and prom dresses for free. The community center location “headquarters” is actually a farm owned by an elderly couple. There is a barn, a venue and a very nice green field with an artificial lake and some fowl. They charge for the use of their facilities (weddings , etc.) but not for community oriented stuff.
Pat had always been salty at her husband for demanding that she go back to work after baby #3. In the meantime, he worked three jobs. She demanded he get her pregnant to fulfill her dream of having 5 kids. He didn’t agree, because he was already nearly 45 and felt like he might never be able to retire. She got away with bringing new babies into this world anyway. Her fascination with being pregnant comes from all the attention she gets. She had at least one miscarriage in between each kid.
Pat latched on to our group. She never missed any of our activities. I hated having her in my house, but it was an open invitation that included virtually everyone and she was very active as an event organizer. I didn’t like the way her kids behaved. We have a designated area for parties and entertainment, but her kids ended up inside my bedroom. We ended up having to keep watch of them and enjoyed zero of our own party.
I called her days later to get my point across (regarding their overall behavior) but she completely cut me off and began talking about herself and said her kids wanted to come visit again and use our pool. I never answered that. I didn't want to say “no, I will not have your brats over”.
She also called me as summer was approaching specifically to let me know her middle daughter was bored and wanted to spend a WEEK at our home. I politely declined, citing that me and my husband have to work and cannot entertain guests. .
Pat paid no heed. Her kid called me on the weekend, calling me “auntie” and attempted to coax me by saying “Mom says you invited me to spend SUMMER with you”. I quickly clarified, and offered an explanation to avoid hurting a kid’s self esteem. Nevermind. Her daughter just hung up on me.
Pat’s facebook also showed some red flags. Some cryptic rants here and there were visible, along with friends’ comments and complaints on how she asked a particular person to watch her kids only for a couple of hours and ended up leaving them all day. Another of her friends criticized her “girls night out “ because Pat had just asked them to be patient and wait until she could pay back some money that she owed them, yet she had money to spend on Friday night outings. I thought those very public comments on private matters were more like a cry of lost patience.
Unpleasant things began to happen. Like the time she volunteered to wrap the Xmas presents for underprivileged kids. We all wanted to create a mix of less costly gifts with really nice ones. Surprisingly, some nice and eye-catching toys and games went missing but turned up under her Christmas Tree (courtesy of her mother in law’s FB posts). No one could prove anything but it was hate-inducing. Or the time my daughter called me in tears to pick her up after she attended Pat’s daughter’s birthday (Casey). My daughter had been ignored all night because she didn’t gift her the expensive gaming stuff Casey practically demanded. My daughter did ask, but I said no. We would buy her a very nice and thoughtful present according to her taste. So when I went to pick her up my daughter was sitting alone in the living room while Casey and her friends stayed outside.
Stories about Pat and her family multiplied. The owners at the farm (community center) decided keep their their gates locked unless they had guests or events because Pat got in the habit of driving in whenever she pleased and it was either her kids screaming and disturbing on-going weddings, throwing rocks at the koi in the lake or harassing the geese in the yard. Or how she stiffed another soccer mom with the lunch bill and then pulled the struggling financially card. Or how other parents hated her because she created unnecessary hostile competition.
When my daughter turned 13, I allowed her to wear my grandma’s ring. It's not an expensive piece of jewelry, but it's vintage and girls nowadays wanna look boho. My Granny gave it to me when I became a teenager so I passed it on to my kid so she could wear it on her birthweek.
It was weird that she became quiet and distracted after that. She also didn’t want to go to school and my husband and I became suspicious. She never opened up, and my other kids had no clue.
We went to her school but her teachers assured us nothing had changed in her environment. My husband and I suspected she was being bullied but our kid gave us no tools to support her. My kid is very sunny, and very compassionate. She has never had any problems with other kids. I called her best friend’s mom. Natalie, my kid’s BFF, told us what was going on. Casey (Pat’s eldest) and my daughter had become “close”. I knew this and wasn’t too thrilled. I found the age (Casey was 17) gap not exactly inappropriate but I’d rather see my daughter spend time with friends in the same age range. Casey is very beautiful and a gifted student. She is also very conceited. To make this story short, she asked my daughter if she could try on the ring and refused to give it back. She later claimed that she lost it but “would look for it” so my daughter was distraught. My daughter kept asking for her ring and as a result, Casey shunned her and spread the word that my kid was trying to steal HER ring. Some kids at school took Casey’s side. So now Casey just wore my kid’s jewelry to school like nothing happened. If that doesn’t qualify as taunting I don't know what does.
My guilt comes from not being able to get my daughter to open up and feel safe telling me the truth. I talked to her and she burst into tears. I was both pained as a mother and furious that some teenage b!tch was doing this under our noses.
I went straight to Pat’s car after school. I asked to talk as Casey was about to go in. So I grabbed Casey’s hand and asked to see her jewelry. Casey froze and she tried to make a fist, so I became relentless. Casey yelled “Mom!” and Pat struggled to get out of the car. I slid the ring off (Casey has tiny hands and wore the ring on her index finger). First Pat yelled at me. After I confronted her with the engraving on the band (my grandma's maiden name), she argued it was loaned to her daughter by my kid. Then she said she bought it. I paid no heed. I did warn them that I knew Casey had become an abusive friend to my daughter.
Pat called me to tell me off. She said she was trying to raise an assertive young woman and I had just messed that up by being “overbearing”. She never apologized for her thief of a child.
Pat's husband ( Hank) is what can be described as a doormat. Pat wore him down to a knob. He had no choice but to “obey” her to keep the peace. She was a bully who actively withdrew affection when he didn’t follow her wishes, even in public. So she got kids #4 and #5 after a relentless campaign that included leaving him for two months. Her pregnancies were a nuisance because she expected to be treated like the only lady who has even been pregnant. She strolled around in a wheelchair almost immediately after getting pregnant and she would “get very sick” on weekends, so her kids were often sent to friends and family so that she could “rest”.
Pat systematically bullied Hank. She would leave town and take the kids with her. Poor Hank would look distraught, drinking on his porch or just looking really lonely. This is how she got off the hook and was able to leave her job. Hank had virtually no voice, so he struggled to keep the marriage together. Everyone liked him, but hated her equally. Hank loved to talk to other people but seemed concerned that Pat would be upset. Over time, according to my husband, Hank began to show signs of depression and mental distress.
Our friend, Lenah, runs the wedding/prom dress initiative. It's not complicated. Dresses are sourced from donations, ebay, trunk shows, etc. Unusually beautiful dresses are retained so that more than one bride gets to wear them. In some cases, a bride will pay 50 bucks, but most of the time, the dresses are donated to the bride.
Pat was involved in this. Lenah kept her in because they never had any issues and her task was limited to just shipping the dresses out.
Pat decided to renew her vows and her bridezilla Karenzilla attitude became the icing on the cake. For starters, she bullied another couple into giving up their wedding date at the farm because she “needed her renewal to match her exact wedding date”. They were not impressed with her harassment, so they booked another venue. As a result, the farm owners were pissed because Pat was already costing them money after she had successfully negotiated a cut in their rate “because she couldn't afford it but will repay by doing maintenance work around the venue” (she never made good on her word).
Pat became attached to a particular dress that was already assigned to another bride. Lenah made it clear that she would need to pay for her own dress. So Pat played it cool and shipped the wrong gown instead. She was adamant that it was the right dress, despite all the notes on Leah’s agenda. The other bride was truly gracious about it. She was obviously disappointed, but never made a scene.
What bothered me most is that I picked that dress and bought it for 40 bucks at a garage sale (not my money, Leah’s money). It was a vintage dress, ankle length, white with lots of lace and a huge bargain. Again, when confronted, Pat “did a Casey” and used the “this is mine” strategy. We felt so bad for the other bride that we did our best to get her something nice to wear. The other bride was a true fighter, she had pulled out of welfare, earned her high school diploma and was working to get on her feet by trying to earn a certificate as an acrylic nail technician. So, her reward was to have some Karen steal her dress? Pat never admitted to messing up, but just by the fact that she claimed it was her dress, we knew.
Lenah never allowed her in her warehouse again. Their last phone fight ended with Pat bringing up the other bride’s past (like it mattered) and “this conversation is over, it's my dress and you are mistaken”. That was weeks before the other bride’s wedding.
Pat went all out on her wedding decor. She spent way too much. She hired a caterer for some food (mainly mimosas and appetizers), but the wedding invitation included a request for specific dishes for her Sunday brunch wedding. Either she ran out of banquet money or was on a complete moocher mode.I picture the penguin walking upon practically asking everyone to supply her wedding reception grub and I cringe.
There is nothing wrong with potluck weddings. In fact, they can be a nice addition to a very cozy and family oriented wedding reception. But, don’t you need to at least be close to your guests in order to ask for such a thing? Even I got an invitation. I told everyone I wasn’t going because I was very uncomfortable being told what to bring and was probably expected to give them a cash gift on top of that. Some of the older ladies in our group agreed. Some said they would not decline in advance because she is a bully and they didn’t want a confrontation.
Lenah called me the night before Pat’s re-wedding. Lenah was there to close the Saturday night bingo and Pat was awfully friendly, but that’s what she does whenever things are going her way. Lenah peeked into the garment bag and saw the exact same dress while Pat was caught up supervising the wedding decoration.
The thing with Karens is that they expect everyone to suck it up, or make their dreams come true, or they simply underestimate everyone and think we are all fools.
Lenah is a very straightforward person with a “so sue me” attitude. She told me she would just ruin the dress. After all, it was hers, so she could do whatever she wanted. If Pat wanted to take legal action, and should things get ugly, she needed to prove ownership. However, the dress was the same, the marks inside the hem and the tags were the same. Even the tag numbers that were punched to identify each dress for logistics purposes matched.
Pat had the dress altered, with some extra beading and dyed to a deep cream color. But it was obviously the same garment. Lenah and I snuck in before the venue was closed for the night. All brides are allowed to stay in a small bedroom for a small charge, so that they don’t need to drive in on their wedding day. Honestly, the makeshift chapel was gorgeous, I don’t know how she paid for it but it was full of flowers and presumptuous details. I naively brought in some ink to spill on the dress, but Lenah said she wanted “something more awful, like a nasty surprise”. Ink would be too obvious and if she saw it ahead, she may be able to snag another gown from somewhere. No, the ideal thing was to have her trust the dress was fine. So Lenah locked herself in a bathroom stall and completely cut out the back panel. She patiently put it back on its hanger and zipped the bag. We left through the emergency door with the back of the dress stuffed inside Lenah's purse. I completely hate people who target and steal from anyone they (Pat and her kid) calculate to be in a weaker position.
The wedding was scheduled at 9 AM. Pat called me at 7 AM, but I ignored her calls. I picked up by 8 AM, both curious and wondering if she suspected anything. Pat was frantic. She was crying that her dress was “missing by half”. I purposely made her explain, being annoyingly dense and continually interrupting like she does, and stalling the conversation. She asked me if I could lend her my wedding dress. I said no, sorry. She then asked me if I would help her get a dress. I was satisfied to remind her that the town's bridal shops were closed on Sunday and the others that would open were almost an hour away. The farm is already almost one hour away from our town.
If Pat could get a shop to rent a dress, she would need to try the dress on, and get it steamed. Even if the dress was ready to wear, it would easily take more than two hours (roundtrip). She tried to ask me to go pick a dress (who would pay for this??). Even if a shop were open and brought her a dress, it would add to the cost. Also, these shops open at 10 or 9:30 at earliest. By time they got to her, it would be time to wrap up the wedding because she needed to clear the venue by 12:00 for the next event.
She broke down and mumbled some stupid stuff I didn't understand. So Pat hung up on me and called Lenah instead.. She asked Lenah to bring her “anything she had available”. Lenah and I ended up delivering the most outdated, moss smelling, oversized dressed. Pat’s disappointment was a mix between angry and emotional. She also tried to wear her knee length silk bridal slip as a wedding dress but it was too obvious and it really looked cheap. She tried to get her daughter to give her her own dress to wear with an open back zipper (due to fitting issues) but Casey refused, asking if she was supposed to attend the wedding naked (she got a point, plus Casey is petite).
The dress needed a petticoat to plump up the skirt, which wasn’t available. So it dragged all over the floor and Pat had to keep pulling it up. Pat walked down the aisle with one hand on her bouquet and another one grabbing her dress. The dress looked limp and weird with the arrangements of pins (they didn’t show) that caused the sleeves and neckline to pucker into messy rims. She spent the ceremony looking uncomfortable and out of place. Very few people attended but that was not part of any revenge, that was just how people reacted to her entitled attitude.
The dress looked awful. The reception portion of the wedding had all this princely decoration, a very nice cake and a bridezilla with a dress from hell. I didn’t stay, but I was told, she was so disappointed she spent her wedding sulking. There was no dance, no actual speech. She had to change into a shirt and leggings because the dress was too uncomfortable. Everyone talked about how Pat put on her flip flops and walked around aimlessly until she ordered the ushers to start folding up the chairs within one hour of the reception. So she practically kicked everyone out and the cake was never cut.
Pat wasn’t the same after this. She was not as loud and avoided everyone. I think she was disappointed that nobody ran to her rescue, not even her family who came from out of town.
Her husband finally cracked under all the pressure and sought some help. He was slaving away and coming home to clean the house while Pat used her kids as an excuse to spend like crazy. Hank also had to do kid homework because Pat never had time or never had patience. She also refused to get a partime job so her kids could attend an afterschool and get help with their school stuff. Therapy seemed to help Hank because the last time Pat left with her kids, he didn't seem distraught. He would be riding his bicycle and could be seen more relaxed while mowing his lawn. Hank told my husband that he had contemplated suicide after their third kid. When Pat returned, he maintained the routine but was interested in going out by himself and doing things for himself. We began to see Pat alone all the time. Hank was seen less and less in the same car and eventually moved in with his parents. He filed for divorce on the grounds of emotional cruelty and I don't think he won. Instead (I’m not sure of this because this is what I was told) there was some sort of a settlement or agreement that she would not get close or interact with him unless it has to do with the kids).
I also don’t know if Pat even actually suspected who/what happened to her dress. She slowly pulled away from the community center and became less active in social gatherings. Pat also removed me from her facebook as well as mostly everyone else from school and the center.
EDIT: TLDR
Bridezilla stole a wedding dress from an underprivileged woman. The actual dress owner destroys her big day.
EDIT: Regarding my kid, there were no prior incidents. Pat, her family and my family were not "friends'. I did see her often. After Casey's birthday incident, there we no additional situations until what happened with the ring. After that, Casey played the "OP treated me badly" card because I physically removed the ring from her hands but I honestly don't feel I need to protect her emotions.
EDIT: THANKS to everyone who took their time to read. Thanks for the nice and kind comments and even the naysayers or aggressive ones. I understand we are all different and some situations can seem enraging or so difficult we instantly want to fix it by reacting or by reproaching. Its human nature to instantly go for "this is what should have happened instead". I appreciate your input. Even the mocking, raging and scrutinizing ones show me indignation and this is good. No one has yet said "I love what Pat did" and that shows we are still striving for a more fair and balanced life. Even the snyde comments show me this has gotten under your skin and I try not to judge. The lovely and supportive Redditors who have shown kindness are also very appreciated.
For the most accurate description, these links can help you get an idea. Not the actual dresses, but extremely close.
What she thought she would wear down the aisle: (shorter sleeve, no train, only ankle-length)

What she got, oversized, outdated. Actually, the dress was even bigger.

2020.10.05 20:10 DiamondsNDenim_ My story about finally ghosting my abusive, narcissistic mother

UPDATE- NEW EDITS AT THE BOTTOM.
I’m going to make this as short as possible because this is one long story. If I leave out any details, feel free to ask and I’ll share those too. But I thought you guys would like to hear my story.
When I was little, I had a really good childhood. I will say that. My parents were together, they had money for fun things like horses and camping, and they both loved me very much. But they secretly struggled with each other. My mom never wanted kids, and at 32, 9 years after getting married, they had me. She always resented me, even though I couldn’t see it for a while.
My mom wanted lots of money and freedom, and me (and my little sisters) ruined that for her. When I was 6, after my youngest sister was born she finally became a stay at home mom. But she still wanted lots of money, so she told my dad to work extra and do night shifts because it paid more.
But she was mad at him for being gone all the time, so she would punish him by not cooking for him or saving him leftovers.
Eventually, he had a female coworker notice that he never had food unless he stopped at a vending machine, so she brought in an extra lunch box with her, just for my dad. After a couple years of this, it eventually led to a secret affair. Mostly emotional.
He came clean with my mom, they got therapy, things were good again. As soon as things were good she went right back to ignoring him and punishing him like a child. She said many times, in front of me and his family, that he would be worth more to her dead (insurance money) than alive. This led to my dad getting close with another coworker. But before anything happened, the coworker’s husband shot and killed my dad.
I was nine. And his death came 18 months after my dad’s dad died. And 9 months after my dad’s mom died. Both in their 80s. After my grandparents died a whole bunch of their stuff got thrown in our basement for my dad to go through. Obviously, he didn’t get a chance to do that.
I learned very quickly that my dad was the only person protecting me from my mom.
After that, my mom would beat me, scream at me, and call me all sorts of horrible names. She’s told me so many times she wishes she aborted me, especially on my birthdays, at my graduation party, and right before my husband and I got married.
What’s worse, my mom was involved heavily with our church and was (is) well respected.
During every break from school, my mom made my sisters and I clean the basement mostly and the rest of the house some- 12 hours a day, every day. I literally dreaded breaks from school.
But we didn’t know what to do with any of the stuff, it wasn’t ours. So we sorted it wrong. She’d get mad and knock the piles over and scream and then spend an hour or two having a ‘family meeting’ where she’d hold us hostage and force us to watch her scream and cry about how bad her life is. We did this on every single holiday and break from 2006 until 2015 when I got kicked out of the house (we’ll get to that in a minute).
She would also wake us up at 2 or 3am on school nights a lot to yell about how dirty the house is and how unfair her life is and how we’re ruining it. Usually that lasted 45 minutes before we could go back to bed. If she was really angry we’d stay up all night cleaning and then go to school without the chance to brush our teeth or fix our hair.
She got social security and insurance money after dad died, so she never went back to work. She didn’t clean the house, would berate us about it being dirty all night, sleep while we were at school, and then yell at us when we got home.
She was wildly unstable and very unfair.
I frequently forgot to turn my jeans right side out before putting them in the hamper. And I forgot to take my hair out of the shower floor after my showers. Or I’d be late to feed the horses. You’d think with her punishments I’d remember better, but I just couldn’t.
To punish me she would do what I called ‘jumping’ me. She would hide behind something, usually the wall in the living-room by the stairway, or the fridge in the kitchen, and wait for me to walk by. When I came through she’d grab me by my hair, throw me to the ground and kick me until she was tired. Usually it was less than 10 minutes, but it felt like hours. She would jump me like that usually twice a week, but sometimes more, sometimes less.
She beat me black and blue and bloody all the time. I hid the evidence with jeans and long sleeves year round. I’m friends with a former teacher and I recently told her some of the things I’m telling you guys. She said she thought I was just a weird horse kid who liked to wear western shirts buttoned all the way up my neck. She said she couldn’t believe it, all the signs were there but she never even for a moment questioned it because my mom seemed like such a great parent.
When my now-husband and I were first dating, we stopped at a gas station to use the restrooms and get fuel. When I was walking out of the restroom, I was feeling anxious because I hate not buying something in the store after using the restroom (even if we had just spent $50 at the pump, I thought the clerk would be mad at me).
Well while I was worrying, husband hid behind a display case, jumped out and tugged my ponytail to be playful and scare me. I, without thinking, fell to the ground, curled up in a ball and covered my head and neck with my arms. There were two families standing nearby who saw the whole thing. They gave me the saddest look of pity and then shot him daggers. I embarrassed both of us so much. When we got outside, I had to tell him the truth and I cried my eyes out.
Twice in high school, once when I was dating a now ex boyfriend, and once with now-husband, she thought I was pregnant. I wasn’t even sexually active. But she kicked and punched my stomach until she was too tired to keep going. She kicked my ribs by accident the second time it happened and I’m not sure if she broke two of them or not. They still hurt when it’s cold out. I was sure I had internal bleeding and was terrified to sleep those nights.
At the time I didn’t care too much. I mean I didn’t like it, but I knew there was no chance of pregnancy. But now I’ve got two babies of my own. Looking back, I could throw up. These precious little babies. What if I was active, and I was pregnant, she would’ve killed one of my sweet children. She says she’s pro-life but she’s obviously not. I’m getting out of order though.
The fall after I graduated high school I went to a medium sized college about an hour away. My first class was at 8am and my last class ended at 10pm.
One night I came home to find all my stuff thrown outside and the door locked (I lost my house keys one week earlier). My mom said I was gone so much I might as well never come back.
I didn’t know what to do that first night. I lost my job earlier in the year, and was living off my savings to cover my gas, insurance, phone, and whatever food I bought. My mom didn’t pay for that.
I ended up going to the Walmart parking lot to sleep that first night. My now-husband was a truck driver and 500 miles out.
When he came home, he and his family took me in and let me live with them. But the day before I forgot my debit card at home when I went to class. So we had to go back. My mom and now-husband screamed at each other for a half hour while I hurried and grabbed the few things she didn’t throw out (conveniently enough, these were my more valuable items).
I lived with him and his family 4 months. That’s when my great uncle, who saw all this happen, called me and told me I could have his secondary home. He and his mom also had a bad falling out and he said he didn’t want the same for me and my mom.
I offered to pay him rent or make payments to buy the house but he refused. He was estranged from his mother, and he didn’t want to see me have the same relationship with mine.
He told me if I wanted to pay him back, I could try to work through my issues with my mom. It would make him happy to see us talking again. My mom likely suffers from undiagnosed bipolar depression, which caused her to be severely emotionally and physically abusive. She also has some narcissistic tendencies, which makes it difficult to be around her.
But, I did my part, and I started speaking to her. I started visiting and speaking to her, and we both made an effort to make amends. My uncle was really happy with our progress. He, my mom, siblings, and I even went out to dinner several times.
He reassured me that the house would someday be mine, and not to worry about it.
Anyway, I cannot tell you how grateful I was for this house. I was embarrassed to be living at my boyfriend’s, and it was amazing to have a safe (abuse free) home that I was the adult in. With that said, this house was a train wreck.
My uncle had previously lived in this home for decades before he finally got to buy his dream home and move. During those years, he’d been collecting (aka- hoarding) a lot of stuff.
This house was so bad I didn’t know it had a porch. Before I moved in, the house literally had a narrow path to the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and front door. And that was it.
The house smelled horrible, I had to repaint every square inch of the ceiling, walls, cabinets, etc to alleviate that. It had carpet throughout, which was 50 years old and obviously disgusting. One of the bedrooms had really deep 2-3 inch shag carpet. Upon closer examination, I realized there was dog feces hidden in it.
We eventually replaced all the carpet with locally grown and cut hickory hardwood flooring.
It took 3 large roll of dumpsters, a dozen trips of hauling off junk in the back of my truck, and countless bonfires to clear it out. I even gave permission to some pickers/metal scrappers to go through the garage and haul away junk. I think they took 2 full size dump trucks of stuff away.
There was so much stuff that I found 9 dressers in the house and the 1 car garage that I didn’t even know about.
There was a lot of other work that the house needed, but those are the main projects my husband and I did. We did 100% of the work by ourselves too, so it took us a long time to do all this fixing up.
Finally, my husband and I were ready to get married. My mom offered to let us get married at her house, we agreed. Well, our wedding day rolls around, and she and the house are a train wreck. She “forgot” it. We call everyone to push it back a month. We had to get a new photographer because ours couldn’t do the new date.
Whatever, we get it done. And we do get married at my mom’s house. But it wasn’t a happy day. She generously bought my wedding dress for me, but it needed hemmed. My mom is incredible with a sewing machine, but she refused to fix it. My grandma and I tried to do it, but it turned out horribly. It was lopsided and some of the slip ended up showing. Mom also offered to do my makeup. She bitched at me the whole time and ended up quitting halfway through because she was ‘too stressed’. I tried to finish it myself but it also turned out kinda bad lol.
So we get married. And the next week my husband and I got in his semi truck to live out of full time.
Our plan was to save money and buy a house in Montana, and turn our Indiana house into a rental eventually. My mom promised to keep my old horse that I’d had for 10 years for me.
Well, I came home for a surprise visit after about a year and learned that she gave my horse away. I had the papers though, and tracked my horse down. My husband and I built fence for her, and I went back to living in Indiana to take care of her.
2.5 years ago (two years after I moved in) my sweet uncle passed away.
And then I found out he hadn’t gotten around to updating his will. He left everything (‘my’ house, his house, and some money that I don’t know the amount of) to my mom for her to decide how it would be distributed.
At first, she said don’t worry about it, she knew that my uncle had given the house to me, and nothing would change.
Then 8-10 months go by and she has the two houses appraised. ‘My’ house is an 1100 square feet 3bed/1bath on less than a 1/2 acre. His house is an 1800 square feet 4bed/2bath on 5 acres with a 3 car garage, greenhouse, and a decent sized barn.
Keep in mind, this appraisal happened almost 3 years after I’d been working and living in this house. ‘My’ house was valued at $40k. His was $80k. His would be worth at least $10k more if the home were torn down (the appraiser didn’t believe that it was possible to clean a house that full- I wish he’d seen what mine looked like before!).
After the appraisal, my mom said I needed to buy her and my two siblings’ shares of the house. So I would owe $30k. For a second I thought that was unfair, but the money would help my family, and it would feel good to say that I paid for my home, so I agreed and started making payments.
During my time in Indiana, I got pregnant with our first baby. I was SO excited and happy. When I told my mom she said she didn’t want to be a grandma and acted like it was a teen pregnancy or something. I had been living on my own for 4 years. I never asked anyone for any help or any money. Whatever.
Then when baby is born, she’s grandma of the year on Facebook, but despite living a half mile away, never visited. And when we visited her, she would ignore my daughter when my daughter tried to talk or play with her. It broke my heart.
Then when I told her I was pregnant with my son, she said again that she didn’t want to be a grandma. She had never babysat or changed a diaper before (I never asked her or anyone else to) but she still acted like this baby would be a huge burden on her.
In July of this year, I made my last payment on the house. My husband and I tried calling my mom and siblings to see about getting the house signed over, but they wouldn’t answer our calls. Or text. And they literally hid when I tried to visit them.
After a few weeks of this, my mom finally called my husband. She wouldn’t be signing the house over because my siblings (aged 17 and 19 now) felt like it was unfair that I was getting a house, and they weren’t. I talked to them individually before I started making payments, and they said they were totally fine with me buying the house. I don’t know what changed.
So I asked about the money paid, and my mom said that would be considered rent since I was living in the house free.
I offered to pay more for the house. They said they don’t want to sell it.
One month before all this went down, my siblings house sat for me while I went on a 6 day trip out of town. During that time they got a good look at the interior of the house.
And they decided that it’s so nice, I need to pay $1000 a month in rent (rent won’t include my utilities, trash, lawn upkeep, etc that I’ve been paying/maintaining all along) or get out.
I live in rural Indiana, so that’s kinda steep rent for our area (especially without any utilities or amenities).
She and my sisters also made fun of me for being stupid enough to give them money without there being a contract.
I had a 1 year old baby, and was due to have our second baby in about a month. I had pre-eclampsia, meaning high blood pressure from stress could be potentially fatal for me and/or my unborn son.
She pretty much cornered me hoping I wouldn’t have anywhere to go and would just pay her the $1k a month.
I talked to a lawyer who said I had a case to get my money back, but since the house was in her name, I likely couldn’t have it unless she just couldn’t afford to give me my money back. She also warned me it would take months if not a couple years to win this. My mom would have to file for an eviction (which were banned at the time due to COVID-19) and thats when we could show proof that we paid her for the house, all the improvements, etc, and fight back. But I didn’t want to sue my own family, and I didn’t want to live .5 of a mile away from her for another year or two.
So I surprised her. My husband and I bought a house online 2100 miles away. And we moved out the same day we closed on our new home. We packed everything that could fit in a 16 foot moving trailer and left the rest of it. I did sweep and mop the floors before I left out of respect for the old home that I loved so much. But that was it.
It took 4 days to get to our new home because we traveled with our 18 month old daughter who needed lots of walks and diaper changes. On the way out I called a bunch of obgyn’s trying to find a doctor who could deliver my baby via c-section (I’m too narrow to have a natural birth unfortunately) and found one I loved. But we blocked their numbers, blocked their social media, and didn’t give them any idea where we went. I delivered my beautiful son. I fell in love with our new home. I’m in therapy now. My husband and I finally feel at peace. And I am so happy.
EDIT:
My post ended up on JustNoTruth so here’s the important pieces of information I forgot to add.
Info 1:
Here’s Athena’s story! Mom said she would keep her. I sent my mom gift cards to buy feed, even though mom said I didn’t need to do that. I came home to visit after a year and she was gone. My mom told me she had given the horse back to the friend we bought her from 10 years ago. I borrowed my grandparents (on my moms side) cattle trailer and hurried over to the guy’s house because he was a horse trader. He had already sold her (for the same price I paid 10 years earlier!!) to an 8 year old girl who wanted to run barrels. My horse was old as hell and very Arthritic. And he didn’t have her papers because I had them. The little girl had been paying for riding lessons on her and was due to pick her up the day after.
My husband was pissed and asked why he was selling my horse when he knew it was mine and not my moms, why hadn’t he called me? The trader said he was just keeping the horse for my mom since she didn’t have the space or feed for her (a lie, she had two open stalls and my gift cards). Meanwhile I was talking to the trader’s wife and she was going on about how she didn’t know that I didn’t know, but I was lucky because .
I have no idea how they broke the news to the girl that she couldn’t have Athena, but I do feel bad for her.
We took Athena to my father in laws farm with his horses and she stayed there until we built fence on my grandparents place and bought my husband’s very old gelding (early 30s) he had as a kid named Chocolate Man.
They lived together one year when Chocolate Man died most likely of EPM. Athena died 20 days later. I think they coupled up and she missed him a lot that last month. She was 29 when she died.
I don’t know if you’ve heard the term ‘heart horse’ but she was mine. It’s basically the horse of a lifetime. She wasn’t spectacularly trained or anything pretty to look at, but she was my best friend all through my very awkward middle and high school years. I used to ride her at least one hour a day every day or the week, rain, shine or snow. I’ve got kids now so I doubt I’ll ever have a horse that I’ll get to put that much love and time into.

Info 2:
My c-section.
When I said I needed a c-section it’s because I had an emergency c-section with my first. And then on my second baby I failed my pelvic exam for being too narrow. When I say narrow I mean internally. You guys can see my profile picture, I am very obviously a fat girl!
I knew I had to have a c-section so I was very nervous to have to move so late, especially with my preeclampsia. But i ended up loving my new doctor!

Info 3:
A big piece of the story I forgot to add.
There’s so many details to my story I forgot to add.
But one of them I missed I think you guys will enjoy is this:
My grandfather left some land in his will for me. Just me- not my sisters- even though they were already born when he last updated it. This land generated some money every year through farm rent, though not a lot. After all expenses came out, it was less than 1% of the land’s total net worth. If you know much about investing, this is a terrible return. Index funds generally return a minimum of 4% but sometimes as high as 8-9%.
Also, this land is in a wetzone that floods a lot. Like, ride a kayak through it a couple months a year wet.
My mom for 11 years, spent all the money that was generated from its rent. (My lawyer told me if I wanted to go after that money, it would be an easy slam dunk).
But anyway, my family came from Germany and worked very hard to try to build generational wealth. I wanted to add to it too. And I just knew that selling that ground in order to invest in real estate would be a great move.
My plan was to buy at least one foreclosure house for each sister (plus one for each of my two children) and fix it up with them. That would give them their own home to live in (that was free and clear) if things got bad. Or they could rent it, use it for a reverse mortgage, or they could sell it. Depending on how things went, how they acted, and how much it cost to fix the houses, maybe buy an additional one or two houses for each girl.
Even if they rented the houses well below market value, their return should be at least 8% per house! (Foreclosures go for $15k in that area, even if you put in $35k to fix it up, that’s only $50k for a house.)
That seemed like something my old German family would’ve done, so that’s what I got started trying to do.
Well, I sold the land to an amazing local farming family. And I did it during those weeks that my mother and sisters weren’t answering calls, texts, or the door.
So when my mom called my husband to tell him she was keeping the house, we drove over to her house to talk about it and figure it out.
That’s also when I told my family about the land.
They. Went. Off.
They were so angry with me. They said I was selfish. And I was hiding it from them because I didn’t tell them until now (um... I tried to get in contact but you literally hid under windows when I knocked on the door to talk to you) A lot of other nasty things were said that were completely unrelated.
I tried to explain to them what my plan was and I ran the numbers for them.
They told me I was too stupid to invest, and I never planned on sharing with them. My mom ‘took a vote’ on who believed I was actually going to share. All three raised their hands when she said ‘who believes she was never going to share’. That little detail is irrelevant but so freaking weird I had to share it lol.
They said I was just making stuff up to get out of being caught. (But I wasn’t ‘caught’ I was the one who told them on my own??)
Anyway, they said “give us the money in cash, or don’t give us anything”.
....
Yeah I’ll let you process the stupidity of that statement.
I didn’t give them anything.
I put all that money aside to invest on my children’s’ behalf.
My mom and sisters told my grandparents that the whole reason they kept the house was because I wrongfully sold land that should’ve been given to them, so that was mom’s way of making things fair. But their timeline clearly doesn’t work because my mom told us about the house, before I told them about the land.
And the story doesn’t end there!
My middle sister apparently hit up my aunt (dad’s sister) asking how much her house and land was worth and if she would be inheriting it once she died!!! And she did this not once, but TWICE within ONE week.
I don’t know what my aunt had planned before, but she called me up to laugh and told me that her place will certainly not be going to middle sister now.
I should add that me and this aunt are pretty close now. Dare I say, despite our 50 year age gap, she may be my best friend.
My mom banned her from seeing me when I was 5, so I didn’t get to talk to her again until I was 18/19. We message each other probably an hour a day every other day, whereas she and my sister don’t speak very much.
So that catches you up a bit more on details there!

2020.09.17 16:04 onlyhereforfoodporn Second guessing my dress

I hope this is the right spot for this post, if not, let me know where to post it.
My fiance and I got engaged on July 5th (woohoo!) and we're doing a long engagement (July 9th, 2022!) because of COVID and the city we live in is a popular destination wedding area so a lot of places were already booked for 2021 because of 2020 weddings getting postponed. We wanted to keep July as our date since we started dating in July, got engaged in July, and it seemed fitting to get married in July. Despite having a long engagement, I instantly dove into research for planning. I've joked with my fiance that I should switch my career to event planning since I am actually having fun talking to vendors and researching everything.
So, no surprise that I was looking at wedding gowns online after a week. I had an idea of what I wanted and I pinned a lot of dresses. I was browsing preowned wedding dresses and stillwhite looking for samples and seeing if it would be possible to find a dress in my size and style that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. I have about 30k in student loan debt between my Bachelor's and Master's and I have 8k left to pay on my car, so if there are ways we can save on the wedding and use money towards other expenses, that is even better. I find a dress that is a similar style to what I want (v-neck, sleeveless, lace, fit and flare). It's a sample from a store in California, my size, similar measurements to my measurements, and it is $200! There's $15 shipping to send it to my state. If it didn't work out, I can still return it and just have to pay shipping.
So, I order it. $200 and it's similar to what I want? Heck yes. It arrives, it fits so well, it's a little big which I wasn't expecting. It would need minimal alterations (straps shortened because I have a short torso, hemming because I am short. Maybe taken in slightly at the waist). It is so beautiful and pretty. I had also ordered a belt from Etsy with crystals and some blue beading on it and it looks amazing with the dress. Bonus, the belt was $40. If anyone needs belts/sashes, check out etsy. I figure the belt will be my something blue (my fiance and I met my 4th year at UVA, we did both our undergrad and grad school at UVA, his favorite color is orange and mine is blue. Orange and blue are UVA's school colors. Bridesmaids dresses will likely be orange or blue and I've been looking at orange and blue flowers. No shame). I also had toyed with the idea of a dress I could wear on our anniversary if we went out to a nice dinner. This dress definitely looks like a wedding gown but I could potentially wear it outside of a wedding. I'm now thinking that I shouldn't approach my wedding gown with that idea of wearing it again.
Fast forward a month, my in laws offer to help pay for the wedding. They say they're happy to contribute $35,000 to the wedding. My spreadsheet had our wedding breakdown as costing $28,000. My in-laws are very generous and are in a position financially to help us with the wedding. My fiance is also an only child so I know this is something they are happily contributing to, but 27 years of my parents reminding me of how much groceries cost and holding things like Christmas gifts or haircuts over my head still makes me feel awkward about people buying me stuff or helping financially with things. I still don't feel comfortable with people spending a lot of money on me. My fiance and I talk, we agree on his parents helping with half of the wedding cost.
Meanwhile, some of my friends who either postponed their weddings or cut down on the guest lists get married and my social media is filled with beautiful gowns and these elaborate weddings. One of my jobs is teaching yoga and I often come back to my favorite quote when teaching, "comparison is the thief of joy." I keep reminding myself and saying this quote out loud. If I keep looking at dresses, I will second guess mine. If I keep thinking about these people with crazy expensive weddings, I am going to second guess my minimalist approach. The elaborate weddings with the ballgowns aren't my style. My fiance and I really just care about the music, food, and wine choices.
I keep reminding myself that I started tearing up when I tried on the dress and that it is a beautiful dress. It is also a perfect lightweight material for a summer wedding in the south. I've also been considering getting the straps shortened and seeing if that changes my thoughts on the dress but then I feel like I wouldn't be able to resell it if I do decide on another dress. I've also been considering wearing the dress if we go to the court house next July, which we've talked about. Court house it for tax purposes in 2021, ceremony with friends and family 2022. But then I feel ridiculous having two wedding dresses and part of the appeal of courthousing it would be to wear comfortable (but still nice clothes, so like a white sundress) and go out for a nice dinner after since the courthouse in our city is close to some nice restaurants.
I'm not sure if this is a common feeling with brides. Most of my friends have not gotten married and the two that have gotten married had different situations. One had her mother's dress and wore it. The other friend loved the first dress she tried on and bought it, no second thoughts. I've also hit pause on planning since we booked our wedding venue and our month of coordinator. I feel like there's not much else I can plan until it's 2021 and vendors who I talked to gave me quotes and said we could sign a contract in 2021. I know dresses are traditionally bought around 9-12 months and that I should wait but I'm just so excited for the wedding and I want everything figured out now.
TL;DR I found a really pretty sample wedding dress online after a week of being engaged. It was $215 including shipping. It barely needs alterations (hemming and straps need to be shortened). But I am having FOMO seeing other gowns between Reddit and Instagram/Facebook. I'm not rethinking the belt though, that will go with whatever dress I wear.
My dress is Christina Wu, 17855.

2020.09.08 21:09 tobahmeister I would like your opinion on a dispute between myself and a seller.

So a few days ago I was invited to join a Facebook group about exchanging Halloween themed baskets. The admin of the group was charging a fee to enter into the exchange, to make sure people were serious and not scamming, and also to receive a "Halloween parcel from me."
Well, the seller was being rude to people on the Facebook page and myself and a few other people who have paid our fees mentioned that she didn't have to be so rude. She immediately kicked me out of the Facebook group, thus removing me from the exchange.. which was the point of purchasing the listing on Etsy.
I sent her a message on Etsy requesting a refund, seeing as how I can no longer participate. She responded and says she does not offer refunds, and that when I agreed to the group on Facebook that I agreed to abide by the rules of the group. As far as I am aware, Facebook rules have no legal standing when it comes to monetary exchange on Etsy.
So, she says she will still be sending me the "Halloween parcel" and so she won't refund. Which, I no longer want if I cannot participate in the exchange. I argued that since participation in the exchange was part of the fee and I am no longer allowed to participate, that I am not receiving my entire service. She says since the description only says I am purchasing a Halloween parcel that participating in the exchange is not included. I pointed out that the listing image literally is a text only image that says HALLOWEEN SPOOKY BASKET EXCHANGE, which in turn means that I am purchasing participation in the exchange and she told me what's in the images doesn't count as representation of what I purchased.
She also listed the delivery date as October 25th, so I can't file a claim with Etsy for almost two months.
I told her that I would file a dispute with my bank if I did not receive a refund, and she has been hemming and hawing about how she can't refund me because she doesn't have a computer right now and she can't file a refund on her phone. It's been a run around and I am frustrated.
What do you guys think? I know it's tough since part of it was to pay for a physical participation in something.. but do you think if I waited until I could file a claim with Etsy that I would actually be able to get my money back?
She is making me out to be some kind of villain and I honestly just want my money back. Should I wait to file a claim with Etsy, or just call my bank?

Backyard Wedding Breakdown
We finally tied the knot!

https://preview.redd.it/afbjtchca7k51.jpg?width=2000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1bccb779a28527fc0a4969debefe4ce28cd1e62e
Thank you to this sub for all the great ideas during the wedding planning process. I am a frugal person and the wedding sticker shock throughout wedding planning was real! We had a year long engagement, so I had lots of time to plan. Initially the plan was for a backyard June wedding with 125 people invited. Like many brides, due to covid, we postponed that date, and eventually settled on a 10 guest, immediate family only, gathering in August, with plans for a big party next year.
Because the initial plan was for 125 invitees (only estimated 90-100 would attend), I prepped for 100. By the time we postponed the initial June wedding I had already bought a bunch of stuff. I’ve included it in my total costs, because technically I bought it for the wedding.
TDLR;
Total Spent = $4025
Décor - $225
Reception items - $320
Bride’s attire - $420
Groom’s attire - $400
Bridal Party attire - $70
Wedding bands - $700
Food/drinks - $250
Marriage commissioner - $130
Marriage license - $100
Photographer - $1500

Décor - $225
This includes bud vases, ribbons, name cards, draping fabrics etc… I thrifted pretty much everything. The amount also includes fresh flowers. To save money I bought 7 bunches of flowers for $90, from a wholesale-direct florist that specializes in sourcing locally grown flowers. With these flowers I made my bouquet, 2 bridal party bouquets, and 1 boutonniere. I had maybe 1 bunch worth of leftover flowers. For table décor, I filled bud vases with foraged flowers from the roadside (tansy and queen anne’s lace), supplemented with flowers from my own garden. (the pic has some wilted flowers - the tall bud vases kept on falling over from the light breeze. If I were to do it over, I would get vases with a wider base). I diy dyed 2 cheesecloth table runners. It's very easy if you aren't doing many. After Christmas last year, I bought a bunch of white non-LED Christmas lights at half price, around $10 for 60ft. We strung them up in the yard and they looked magical!
Reception items - $320
I wanted to use real dishes/cutlery/glassware/mugs, but didn’t want to do rentals. So, over a period of 6 months or so I thrifted enough for 100 guests. In hindsight, actually using this amount of stuff is crazy and I’m glad I only had to transport/clean stuff for only 12. Also includes table linens, bought from linentablecloth.com. I had them shipped to a US post box and picked them up from there (pre-covid). I ironed them myself (washing and drying did nothing for the creases!) I did mismatched wooden chairs (from my home), and borrowed tables. The tables were varying widths, but that didn't bother me at all.
Bride’s attire - $420
Includes custom dress from the etsy store DressCulture. I’ve posted about my dress before, as it was an absolute steal of $185. I only need to do minor alterations such as underlining the straps (they were tulle and a little scratchy), add a bustle, and add a belt. All the alterations I did myself. Belt, hair accessories, and veil were from aliexpress. I wore floral converse sneakers (found on sale), which ended up being the best idea as our first look was on a beach, and the entire ceremony/reception was on grass. A friend gifted me half of my haimakeup costs including, trial.
Groom’s attire - $400
Bought a charcoal grey suit from the Bay on Black Friday, and had it altered to fit better. He also bought a dress shirt, vest, tie, and shoes from various mall retailers. We are hoping that the suit will be versatile enough to wear to other occasions.
Bridal Party Attire - $70
We each had an attendant, and I bought both dresses second hand from facebook marketplace. I was super lucky that one dress fit perfectly, and the other dress only needed a hem!
Wedding bands - $700
My wedding band is from Starsgem (see moissanite). It’s gold with bar set cushion cut moissanite. His is Damascus steel from etsy.
Food/Drinks - $250
The costs here are basically for drinks, and cake. We have so much wine in our house now, because I bought around 24 bottles in preparation for original wedding. We bought a celebration cake from a local bakery and placed a cake topper on top. I wanted to put flowers on it too, but ran out of time!
My parents paid for the reception food (Chinese takeout). Groom’s mom paid for rehearsal dinner (Indian takeout). My sister paid for appies (diy charcuterie, from the grocery store). For the reception, I thrifted serving platters and my sister transferred the food from the takeout boxes onto the serving platters.
Marriage commissioner - $130
Marriage license - $100
Photographer - $1500
Our single biggest expense was for the photographer. The package included an engagement shoot, and 6 hours of time on our wedding day (including a second shooter!). I live in a HCOL area, so this was an absolute steal! We already received our sneak peeks, and they are amazing! Arguably, having 2 photographers for a 12 person event is a bit overkill, but we wanted to go all out, in case covid sticks around and we don’t do the big party next year.
Tips for those still planning: Start early! Don't be afraid of buying online from retailers like aliexpress. My hair pins cost less than $1 each, belt was under $10 , and veil was under $3. Shipping takes forever, but that's why you start early! Take advantage of Black Friday and Boxing Day sales. Really really search hard for a photographer. Look places besides wedding wire. I joined a bunch of facebook wedding groups and searched through the responses where other brides were looking for budget photographers. In my area there are hundreds of photographers and MUAs, so it took A LOT of searching to narrow down my options.

2020.08.11 01:05 snowkab 7/25 COVID Wedding Recap: $2,300 Kitsap County, WA, USA 22 guests

We originally planned for a $20,000 80-90 person wedding in Forks, WA, but COVID, so in April we postponed the big celebration to next year. We were lucky enough to get all of our vendors moved to next year with no charges. We’ve been together for six years though, and we wanted to get married this year, so we put together a family-only elopement in our backyard with masks. I was fortunate to use my backyard and have some help from family for the wedding to keep the cost down, but I estimated the price of the things I didn’t personally buy for completeness. Outside of a gift of alterations, sodas, and some leftover decor, we paid for pretty much everything ourselves.
COVID Considerations: We requested that everyone wear a mask, and everyone did. We seated people at tables that corresponded to their households, so there was minimal contact while eating. We didn’t do dancing or any party games. Drinks were individual servings (soda cans, not punch bowl).
Venue & Rentals - $250
We used our backyard. We have a beautiful space that required a few weekends of work and then an entire Friday evening of decorations. We had one bathroom, but no complaints from guests about it. We rented tables, chairs, and tablecloths for $250 from a local party place.
Food & Drink - $500
We spent $200 on taco boxes from a local restaurant– one per table and one extra. Each box was 20 street tacos, beans, rice, chips, and salsa. We provided a box of Seagrams Escapes wine coolers and a Kirkland boxed wine, and my parents provided some sodas and a case of water as well as the ice. We used regular camping coolers that we already owned (not included in price). We spent $180 on a two-tiered cake from Safeway with minimal decorations. It was delicious.
Attire - $300
I had a very fancy dress already for the wedding, but I opted to wear that next year and get something simpler for this wedding. I ordered the Heavenly Hues white maxi dress from Lulu's. It’s usually $84 but I got it for 30% off and paid $64 including shipping. I’m only 5’2, so I had my grandmother hem it and close up the front an inch because there is some serious cleavage in this thing. It was probably $50-$100 worth of alterations if I’d gone somewhere. I also used some skin-to-clothing tape to keep my boobs from falling out the sides. Worked like a charm. I wore a hairpiece from Amazon. I did my own makeup.
My husband wore khaki pants he already owned. He bought a dress shirt, vest, and bowtie from JCPenney. He bought shoes from WalMart.
Rings aren’t included in the cost.
Florals - $125
I spent $85 on a bouquet from a local shop and received the centerpieces as a gift from my husband’s grandmother. She decorated the jars for me, so I can’t estimate prices on those, but I would have used mason jars otherwise. She used grocery store flowers. There were four centerpieces.
Decorations - $300
My sister was married a few years ago and kept her wedding décor, so we were able to use her cards and gift sign, cake stand, Mr. & Mrs. chair signs, and string lights. We would have just gone without the cake stand and chair signs, but I bought additional string lights, and I bought fake greenery, tulle, and paper lanterns. Some of her stuff was from Etsy; all of mine was from Amazon. (Gave my best guess on what she paid for it.)
Photography - $650
We already had a photographer for the wedding that we were really excited about, so we asked her to come for 2.5 hours to photograph this wedding on top of next year’s package. It was a good amount of time.
Officiant – Free
My husband’s grandfather is a licensed officiant who enjoys public speaking. I put together a script for him, he padded it a little, and off we went.
Music and Sound - $30 but we’re unusual
This one is really hard for me to price. The only things we purchased were a Spotify subscription (on sale) and a Bluetooth adaptor, but we have about a thousand dollars worth of sound equipment from my husband’s music hobby. You could pretty easily do our system with some fairly cheap Bluetooth speakers. I put the processional and recessional songs on a Spotify playlist followed by a long list of instrumental piano/guitar pop, country, and metal covers. My sister pressed play on the first one, faded it out, then started the next one when we were ready. Worked perfectly.
Stationary – $10
We really didn’t do any stationary. We used a Facebook event and word of mouth for our families, and no save the dates or programs. I spent about $10 on thank you cards and got enough for this wedding and next year’s celebration.
Rehearsal Dinner - $40
My family got together the night before to help set up my backyard, and I ordered three medium pizzas and some breadsticks for us.
Other - $72
The marriage license was $72. Not included in this budget is the roughly $400 it took to legally change our names, since we were both taking his step-father's last name rather than an existing name.
Timeline:
4:30 - Formal pictures (with masks!) 5:00 - Ceremony 5:30 - Marriage license signing, bride + groom photos, making our cocktails 6:00 - Dinner 6:45 - S'mores 7:00 - Socializing
Most people left by 8:30, except my parents and sister who stayed to help tear down. We were done tearing down in an hour.
What Went Well:
People wore their masks and generally stayed grouped to households. We had enough time to take pictures, and I got to eat some delicious food. My husband’s bowtie was a hit, and the Spotify playlist was perfect.
Things I Would Have Changed:
We hadn’t read our vows since I sent the script to his grandfather, and we’d honestly forgotten them. His grandfather gave us our vows like four lines at a time, and we just couldn’t do it. He had to repeat them for us a few times, and it got some good-natured chuckles. We should have refreshed our memories, and we should have been more clear on where we wanted him to pause.
We tried to get the food delivered, and that would have been nice, but instead we sent my brother-in-law to go pick it up. If we did it again, I probably would have paid someone to go get the food, but we felt awkward asking a friend who wasn’t invited to the wedding.

2020.07.31 16:03 theoddcatlady The Strangest Roommate I've Ever Had

This took place all about three years ago. I was going to college at the time and was living with two of my friends, Phoebe and Macie, along with Macie’s boyfriend Joe. I’d been friends with Phoebe since we were kids but only recently befriended Macie within like a year of agreeing to move in together, and Joe was sort of a last minute addition.
Well, to sum it all up so we’re not here all day, Joe was a jackass. He was a lousy roommate, but he was even worse to Macie, who’s a pretty meek person and a doormat for Jackass Joe. It was the third time Joe was caught sleeping around that Macie finally snapped and broke up with Joe. He responded by taking off and leaving us scrambling for a new roommate so we didn’t end up losing our place. I think it was Macie who posted the ad on our school’s Facebook page as a last ditch resort. It didn’t matter if they smelled like ham or were up all night blasting Marilyn Manson, we just needed someone to pitch in with the bills.
The next day I answered the door to Miss Dorothy Ball.
I could already tell she was a weirdo off the bat- she was wearing a floor length navy colored dress with long sleeves and a high neck and didn’t seemed bothered at all by it considering it was almost ninety freaking degrees out. Not a blonde curl was out of place, not a drop of sweat on her paper white skin or rosy cheeks. Her large blue-green eyes stared at me as I stared at the trunk and suitcase she had behind her.
Her head bowed down, speaking so quietly her lips barely moved.
“I’m Dorothy. I’m here about the roommate ad?”
I only let her in because I felt bad about how hot she had to be in that get up. When she sat across from me I noticed she even had white gloves on, she seemed to be doing all she could to hide every inch of skin she could.
“I have the money here.” Dorothy sat down an envelope on the table. “I intend on staying a full year, minus any unpredictable happenings. I would like to stay in a room by myself, and I promise that I will be silent as a church mouse and that the rent will always be on time. Will that be fine?”
I cleared my throat. “I’ll have to talk to everyone else.” I opened up the envelope and nearly choked on my spit as the crisp one hundred dollar bills fell into my hand. “Is this for half the year?!”
“Just the first month.” Dorothy cocked her head to the side. “I found out the cost of rent, is this too little?”
“You’re only supposed to pitch in a quarter-” I cut myself off as I realized Dorothy knew exactly what she was offering. “You’re paying for all of it?”
“The first month at least.” Dorothy laughed quietly, her lips not even twitching. “My family is quite wealthy. I would just like to live close to the campus and this is such a nice area, I want to show my appreciation for letting me board here.”
I had a meeting with the other roommates after introducing them to Dorothy. I showed them the cash. Phoebe’s eyes filled with dollar signs as she was clearly imagining what she’d do with all the spare cash she had while Macie seemed a bit more hesitant, but we’d not had any other offers. Most people by now had a place to call home while they went to college, and someone offering to pay all of this month’s rent? You’d be an idiot to say no to that.
Dorothy was pleased as punch to be allowed to stay here, even giving us all a hug as she thanked us again and again. Phoebe tried to bolt from the hug but Dorothy insisted on it. We did have to move things around a bit, Macie moved into my room while Dorothy took her old one, but I didn’t mind since Macie and I basically had the same sleeping schedules anyway.
You know how I said I wouldn’t have minded if we got a roommate from hell as long as they paid the bills? Well Dorothy was basically the roommate from heaven. She kept to her promise, she was so quiet she’d sometimes scare me because I didn’t even realize she was there. Not to mention she was a neat freak- there was never a dish in the sink or a speck of dust on the shelves. I swear it was how she had fun, well, that and shopping.
There wasn’t a week that went by that we didn’t have a bunch of packages on the front porch. All cloth or dresses, Dorothy was quite the seamstress. Her closet quite literally overflowed with dresses, all long sleeved with floor length hems. The few that didn’t have high necks she’d pair with chokers or scarves, again, she didn’t want to show any skin. Not like she minded us dressing how we did, I think Phoebe nearly cried with Dorothy presented her with a crop top she made that was hot pink and had her name on the front. She made me something too, this summer themed dress printed with lemon and lime slices. I still wear it whenever I can, and it fits perfectly. She could guess a person’s measurements just by looking at them.
Not to say I wasn’t still a bit offput by her. Something was just not right about this perfect roommate. Any time we’d ask a question about her family or her past, she’d give a half-answer and change the subject, usually by offering to buy us dinner. Even though she did that I never saw her eat, although she enjoyed tea twice a day, once at ten and once at three, like clockwork. I never caught her in the bathroom, although I did hear the shower run late at night when we’d all gone to bed, even Phoebe who’s a night owl and potential insomniac. Whenever she talked she’d bow her head down so I couldn’t see her mouth clearly, she’d never complain about being hot or cold, hell, she never complained at all. And her face was practically frozen. She’d blink, but she had no real expressions from what I could tell- again, she’d always bow her head down so I couldn’t get a clear view of her face past the curly hair.
Again, all of this is weird, but harmless. I chalked up my willies to just Dorothy’s weirdness and did all I could to be friendly to her. I never wanted to be an asshat.
Dorothy was closest with Macie. After Joe left her Macie was pretty messed up, she cried nearly every day and Phoebe said she was afraid Macie was going to drop out and leave us too.
That changed after Dorothy moved in. I think Dorothy sensed how sensitive Macie was and focused a lot of her energy on becoming her friend. Macie never told me what they’d do when they hung out, but Dorothy made it a habit to enter our room and just… talk with her for hours. I’d usually just excuse myself to the living room to binge Netflix and well, whatever Dorothy did worked. Macie got out of her funk, her self esteem shot way up, and she even began going on dates. All the while Dorothy was just basking in her glow, just happy that Macie was happy.
Of course, something did happen. I’m sure you haven’t forgotten Jackass Joe from the beginning of this story. For a little more context, Macie’s old room was on the ground floor, while my room that I now shared with Macie was on the second floor.
Waking up to hearing Dorothy scream bloody murder at around three AM was not a welcome sound.
I jumped the stairs three at a time to rush down there, and when we threw open the door I saw Dorothy was hiding under her quilts while Joe was sitting in the center of the room completely flummoxed.
“I thought it was Macie!” He tried to explain as Phoebe dragged his ass out of there. Naturally, no one was interested, even if it was Macie it’s gross as hell to just crawl into bed with your ex girlfriend who wants nothing to do with your ass anymore.
I approached the bed, Dorothy still shaking and crying. I tried to draw the blankets back but the blanket bulge flinched back. “No! Don’t take away the blankets!” She screamed.
So I just sat by the bed and waited for her to calm down. Her crying did slow but she refused to come out.
“Are you okay?” I finally asked.
“… He almost saw me.”
The very top of Dorothy’s head peeked out from under the blankets, I did absentmindedly note how her eyes weren’t bloodshot and her face wasn’t red and blotchy, but she was still shaking. “I know… I know if anyone sees what I hide, they will never want to come near me again. And to suddenly have a man in my bed, I… I was frightened. I am so sorry for screaming.”
“Don’t be, I think most girls would freak out with a stranger suddenly climbing into their bed,” I rested my hand on the side of the bed. “It’s okay. You’re my friend, no matter what you’re hiding.” I meant it too. Sure, she was strange, but she was nice. And I prioritize nice.
Dorothy slipped back under her blankets, but I heard a muffled ‘thank you’ as I exited the room.
Of course Joe wasn’t going to stop being the worst because he accidentally got in bed with the wrong girl. He began harassing Macie, saying he was ‘sorry that she felt hurt’ and he’d ‘never do it again’. A quick Facebook check revealed that he was about to get kicked out of his dad’s place for being a shithead, so it made sense he’d go back to his doormat ex to get a new place.
Cept of course, in the few months Joe was gone, Macie had grown a backbone and she was just not interested. Neither were the rest of us, Dorothy especially. The first time I heard our strange roommate swear was when I heard her call Joe a bastard over breakfast, which nearly made Phoebe choke on her Cheerios. Joe could rot in hell. Joe probably sent over one hundred texts asking Macie to kick out ‘the weird chick in your room’ so he could move back in. Macie just ignored him, blocked his number and then every social media profile he tried to reach out to her on. She kept blowing him off, and we all figured sooner or later Joe would get bored and leave us alone.
Oh boy. Not even close.
Phoebe was out that night. I just went out to go pick up some frozen pizzas at the corner store, I was probably gone for like ten minutes. When I got back my heart sunk in my chest when I recognized Joe’s truck out front. I didn’t even enter the house to hear them arguing.
I bolted up the stairs to see Macie and Joe screaming at each other. One of Joe’s friends was there too, a guy named Derek. From what I could make out apparently Joe did find another place, but they needed one more roommate to make it work, and apparently Joe was back to harassing Macie about it. Macie’s face was bright red as she yelled at them both to get the hell out of her house, she wasn’t interested in ever being near Joe again, and if he didn’t leave she’d call the police.
That police threat seemed to really rub Joe the wrong way as he grabbed her arm and squeezed it so tight I thought he was going to break it. I tried to step in, but Derek actually pushed me away, stepping between us so I couldn’t get to my friend to help her out. My cellphone was in my pocket and I was considering just running for it to call 911 when I heard someone walking up the stairs.
I turned to see Dorothy, her head bowed so I couldn’t see her face. She was dressed in a white nightgown that reached just past her calves, I could make out what I thought was scarring on her ankles and toes as she paused at the top of the stairs for only a moment. The next moment she stormed up to Joe and grabbed him by the arm, dragging him towards the stairs, clearly intent on throwing him out herself.
“Get out of this house. Right now. And never step near Macie again.”
Her voice was cold and grating, far from the typically soft mumbles. Joe was probably frozen in shock at first, but he reacted with violence. He shoved Dorothy with all his might, Dorothy stumbling for a moment at the top of the steps before losing her balance and falling down the stairs.
When her body collided with the steps, it sounded like someone had taken a stack of china and thrown them down to the ground.
Dorothy rolled down the rest of the steps, the discordant sound of smashing glass causing all of us to freeze in our tracks. Dorothy finally hit the bottom step with her head and stayed all too still at the foot of the stairs.
Joe shot us all a ‘what the fuck’ look before Dorothy stirred. With the rattle of broken glass, Dorothy got up on all fours. For a nauseating moment I thought the side of her nightgown had been pierced with a piece of bone, but with a sickening grinding sound, Dorothy grabbed onto her gown and ripped it down the side, grabbed the loose shard of white porcelain in her hand, and began the painful looking process of crawling up the steps.
Now I could see what Dorothy had been insistent on hiding, now that her gown had been ripped to ribbons thanks to her shattering. Each of her joints was like the ball joint on a doll, a dip in the skin that now made more disturbing grinding sounds as she hauled herself up the steps. Slivers and pieces of porcelain continued to fall from her body, the biggest missing part nearly taking up her entire right side. Inside of her I could make out incredibly lifelike imitations of ribs, lungs, all cracked and breaking apart. Her right cheek was horrifically cracked, her eyelid hanging half down, unable to fully shut or open. Her chin hung loosely open, her mouth a black, gaping hole. But that still open eye was focused right on Joe, and it was full of loathing.
Macie acted first, bolting into her room and turning the lock. Derek screamed in horror and shoved me forward to act as a shield. Dorothy hauled herself up that last step and I nearly fell on top of her, barely managing to catch myself as I stepped on another piece of porcelain and sliced my foot open like butter.
Dorothy paid me no mind as she managed to push herself to her feet, swaying as she tried to regain her balance before she began to limp over to the terrified men. Joe looked at me and I think I remember him saying ‘help me’.
I responded by crawling into Phoebe’s room and locking the door behind me.
They weren’t screaming for much longer.
I hid in there for hours, clamping my hands over my ears to block out the worst of the wet ripping and tearing. I didn’t leave until I heard Phoebe enter the house, call for us, and then shriek when she saw all the blood.
And there was a lot of blood. It soaked the carpet on the second floor, with bits of flesh and muscle embedded in the fibers. But other than that and the shards of porcelain scattered about the stairs, there was no sign of Joe, Derek, or Dorothy.
We never heard from Dorothy again. An envelope containing enough money to cover a few more months of rent did appear in our mailbox, but the police couldn’t even confirm Dorothy Ball was a real person outside of her school registry. I never even told Phoebe the entirety of the story, only that Dorothy had attacked both Joe and Derek.
I still don’t know what I saw, not really. The image of her shattered body crawling up those stairs, the hate in her still working eye as she stared at Joe will never leave even as I try to rationalize how on earth that could happen. People don’t shatter like… like that.
But I do know Dorothy was real. I know she was.
And I’m thankful for her. And she’s still my friend. Wherever she is.

2020.07.09 03:56 throwsuiciaway [FF] My best friend's boyfriend pissed me off, so I [18F] fucked his mom [late 40s F]

The summer after graduating high school, I was in a pissy mood. Yes, the whole summer. I was terrified about going to college hours away from my family and sad to be leaving my friends, especially my best friend, Jillian. Throughout high school, Jillian and I had a covert romantic and sexual relationship. We saw each other intermittently from our first year of high school (age 14) until we left for college (age 18), pausing only when we had boyfriends. And occasionally unpausing it during those times. We somehow simultaneously thought of each other as our soulmate and also a relationship that didn't "count" as cheating because we were both women. It's not something I'm proud of, but it's something I've since learned is actually fairly common amongst closeted teenagers.
Our last semester of high school, Jillian started dating a boy in our year named Tom. At first, I didn't dislike him any more than I disliked her other boyfriends — it was more a general jealousy that she could date them in public instead of an actual dislike of them as individuals. But then, against my wishes, she told Tom about us one night shortly before graduation. I was fucking pissed. I wasn't ready to be "out," and I wasn't even sure what my sexuality was, so this felt like both an invasion of my privacy and a lot of pressure to suddenly define myself. Jillian apologized profusely when she saw how upset I was, and I did forgive her fairly quickly considering my ability to hold a grudge, but the damage was done.
Tom became insufferable. Every time the three of us were in a room together, he would "jokingly" ask us for a threesome as the literal embodiment of what is now known as the "haha jk... unless" meme. Any time he and I were left alone, he would goad me. He'd grab his crotch over his pants, tell me how big his dick was, or say that he could make Jillian cum harder than I ever could because I was just a "dyke with small hands and no cock." I told Jillian about these things, but she kept laughing it off, saying he was just playing around.
To protect myself from getting slapped with a murder conviction, I avoided him as much as possible, which wasn't easy considering he was always fucking there: at beach week, at Jillian and my joint graduation party, at Jillian's side whenever we had plans to hang out. He was determined to prevent us from being alone. I empathized with his concerns because it was true that Jillian had cheated on boyfriends with me in the past, but I was baffled by this dynamic. Why the fuck would you date somebody who you worried would cheat on you the second you left them alone? And why the fuck would you date somebody who didn't trust you enough to leave you alone for more than a second? Jillian refused to set boundaries, saying she didn't want to be put in the middle of it. Tom then started insisting on hosting all our friend group hangouts that entire summer, forcing me to be around him if I ever wanted to see my other friends as well.
To be fair, his house was awesome. His mom had gotten an incredible settlement when his dad violated their prenup and ran off with some Pilates instructor, and she poured a lot of the money into renovating the house. The scandal was the talk of the town when it first happened, and I remember my parents going out of their way to bring her dinners and support her as a newly single mom. She ended up not needing anybody's help. She lost at least 40 pounds, got some work done on her face, and bought herself a fancy car and a whole new wardrobe.
I was honestly floored by how well she handled the divorce in the face of vicious public speculation. She went from being a typical, dumpy small town mom to a hot divorcée in the span of a couple months, and, if the rumors were true, she was taking advantage of her newfound singlehood by constantly going out on dates in town, zipping around in her fancy car with a new guy every time. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't taken a peek at her when we were all hanging out by their pool, but I still wasn't quite sure if I was interested in sleeping with women overall or just Jillian. Either way, she was undeniably attractive.
One hot July afternoon, Tom's mom was inside while the whole friend group lazed around by the pool. Tom was showing off on the diving board for Jillian while I was reapplying sunscreen and struggling to reach my back. "Jill, could you help me out please?" I asked, genuinely innocently.
She took her eyes off Tom and squirted some sunscreen in her hands, rubbing it into my shoulders. When Tom resurfaced, he looked over for Jillian's approval and saw her hands on me. He immediately shot out of the pool and stomped over to us, grabbing the sunscreen out of Jillian's hands and shoving his body between us. "I've got it, Jillian, you don't have to do this," he hissed.
Nevermind the fact that I had no interest in letting him touch me. He forcefully rubbed sunscreen onto my shoulders and back, ignoring me when I asked him to soften the pressure. Jillian left to jump in the pool, throwing her hands up in frustration. Coward. I grit my teeth and bit my tongue, determined not to give him the satisfaction of making a scene in front of our friends. It was the one thing he knew he had over me; Jillian and I weren't out to the friend group, and he knew that as long as he didn't cross a line, I would never tell him off in public out of fear that he would out me. That might seem silly from today's perspective, but this was a decade ago — before same-sex marriage was legalized, before President Obama had even publicly changed his opinion. Especially in a small town, being outwardly queer was something that at best got you ostracized and at worst got you disowned or beaten.
Our friends didn't seem to notice anything was wrong. They were too busy playing chicken in the pool or flirting amongst themselves or reading trashy magazines. Tom took advantage of their distraction to start whispering to me as he forcefully rubbed in sunscreen. "Nice try, Lily," he muttered under his breath, "but you're gonna have to do better than that."
"What the fuck is your problem, dude?" I whispered, "Jillian isn't going to cheat on you. We've both made that very clear."
He scoffed. "Obviously. Why would she go for you when she could have my thick cock?"
I made a noise of disgust, but he kept talking. "The offer still stands for you to join us, though," he murmured, brushing my hair over one shoulder seemingly to apply sunscreen but really just to breathe in my ear, "I'd love for you two to play in front of me."
One of his hands slid over my shoulder to rub sunscreen on my sternum. I tried to shrug him off, but he held me firm. "Please let go of me," I whispered, struggling to keep my voice even.
Tom's hand brushed against the line of my bikini top. "You'll like it better when a man is involved. I'll remind you how much you need cock."
One of his fingertips slid half an inch under my top. That was it. I elbowed him hard in the throat and immediately shot up, rearranging my face to one of playful chagrin and raising my voice for everyone to hear. "Oh my god, Tom, I'm SO SORRY!" I giggled, "I'm so ticklish, it was just an automatic reaction! That's sooooo embarrassing. I'll go get you some ice."
I flounced towards the house as he struggled to breathe, his hand grasping at his throat. Jillian watched me go, concern etched onto her face as she got out of the pool to check on Tom. Fuck her. Fuck that. I was fucking done with Tom's insecurity and constant power plays, even if I had to come out publicly just so he wouldn't have anything on me. I slammed the sliding glass door shut harder than necessary and stormed upstairs to the shower. I needed to wash off the feeling of his hands. As I reached the second floor landing, I nearly ran into Tom's mom. "Oh! Hi Lily!" she said, her kind eyes crinkling as she smiled, "Are you having a nice time?"
How the fuck could somebody as awful as Tom be half made up of her DNA? "Hey, Mrs. S," I said in a peppy tone, overcompensating to hide my anger, "I was just coming up to wash my sunscreen off. I was getting itchy."
"Please, Lily, call me Pam. I'm also not even 'Mrs. Scott' anymore," she winked.
"Right, shoot, sorry, Pam," I said, smiling softly.
"Tom's bathroom is free, but I don't think it's clean enough for guests. Would you like to use the shower in the master bath?"
"That would be amazing, thank you so much."
"There are towels in the cabinet. Please help yourself to any of the soaps and supplies!"
"Thank you — that's really nice of you."
She rubbed my arm gently. Goosebumps erupted in the wake of her touch, and I suddenly felt very exposed in my bikini. "You know I've always been fond of you, Lily. I always hoped you and Tom would get together, not that Jillian isn't a sweet girl, of course."
I couldn't stop myself from laughing, and her look of confusion made me laugh harder. Shit. I needed an excuse. "Tom isn't my type," I explained weakly, trying to rearrange my face into something more casual and polite than abject disgust.
Her eyes widened. Fuck. She definitely thought I was a lesbian. She quickly recovered, smiling at me. "Then I hope you find someone who is," she said genuinely, rubbing my arm again, "You seem like somebody who has a lot of love to give."
She squeezed my hand and then walked down the stairs, leaving behind the scent of lavender and chlorine. That definitely could have gone better. Well, at least she wasn't one of the more gossipy moms, having been the recipient of some nasty rumors after her divorce and proven herself to be above it all. Besides, Tom was probably already posting a Facebook status about my sexuality as revenge for the elbow to the throat. Comparatively, his mom's suspicions were barely an issue.
I took my time in the shower, scrubbing at my skin with a loofah until it was rubbed raw. I then grabbed a fresh towel from the cabinet and wrapped it around myself, standing in front of the mirror and surveying Pam's fancy skin creams. A light knock on the door startled me. "Lily? You find everything ok?" Pam called through the door.
I opened it and smiled at her. "Just snooping through your fancy skincare options! Which do you recommend for minor sunburns? My face looks a little red."
She smiled back and stepped around me into the bathroom, picking up and putting down bottles as she looked at the labels. I watched her intently. Fuck, she was beautiful. Her face was the epitome of quiet dignity and kindness, like Lindsay Duncan or Helen Mirren. I found myself raking my eyes down her body. "This one is great for sun damage," she told me, squeezing some of the cream onto her finger and dabbing it across my cheeks.
She paused for a moment and smiled at me. "You have such beautiful skin," she said softly, "I miss having that youthful complexion."
"Are you kidding?" I laughed, "I would kill to look like you now, let alone when I'm a mom to a teenager."
"That's sweet of you to say."
"I mean it, Pam. You are absolutely gorgeous."
She waved off the compliment. "It's nothing other than the magic of a good dermatologist and flattering clothing. You should see how much loose skin I have from losing weight."
"I find it hard to believe that any inch of you isn't beautiful."
I knew I was crossing a line with my shameless flirting, but I couldn't bring myself to give a shit. She already suspected that I was attracted to women; if she was uncomfortable with it, then she wouldn't have come into the bathroom after she saw I was half naked. She flushed, looking away from my intense gaze and screwing the cap back on the cream. "All done. How does that feel?"
"It feels great," I said, still looking at her, "but I'm afraid I forgot my clothes downstairs."
She noticeably swallowed. Interesting. Her eyes flickered down to where my cleavage peeked out over the towel. "You're more than welcome to raid my closet," she offered, "I'm sure I have some options that are close enough to your size."
"Thank you so much, Pam," I murmured, running my hand down her arm and squeezing her hand, "Would you mind please pointing them out to me?"
She led me into the master bedroom and pulled a couple options out of her walk-in closet, hanging them over the edge of a nearby armchair. I intentionally stood a little too close to be casual, letting the slit in the towel wrap reveal most of my upper thigh. Might as well go for broke. "I'll leave you to get changed," Pam said softly, not meeting my eyes and heading towards the door.
"You don't have to go," I murmured the second her hand touched the doorknob.
It was a hail Mary. Sure, I could have just slept with one of my guy friends again, but I was missing Jillian, missing the exquisite flavors and soft moaning of a woman coming apart against my tongue. It had been over two months since I had last tasted Jillian, the longest we had ever gone without sleeping together since we were 14. I thought Pam was going to laugh me off or give an excuse, but instead she closed the door with a soft click and locked it, turning towards me slowly and bringing her eyes up to meet mine. I smiled at her, holding her gaze and untying my towel. It fell to the ground. Her eyes raked up and down my naked form, her lips parting slightly. I walked towards her slowly, pulling my wet hair over one of my shoulders. Her hand gently stroked my hair once when I reached her, her eyes wandering over my eyes, my smile, my tits. I took one of her hands and gently guided her over to her bed. "I haven't done this since college," she murmured.
"I'm sure things haven't changed too much since then," I teased, "it's like riding a bicycle."
She let go of my hand as I sank down onto the bed, not meeting my eyes and playing with the hem of her pool sarong. "I also haven't been with anybody since my husband left."
My eyebrows shot up in surprise. "I thought you've been going on all these dates!"
"I have, but I didn't let them go anywhere."
I took both her hands in mine. "I would be honored to be the first to welcome you back."
She laughed and squeezed my hands. We stared at each other for a moment, smiling softly. "Are we really doing this?" she asked, her cheeks flushed.
I leaned in until my lips were almost on hers. "Yeah, Pam, we're doing this."
She closed the gap, her soft lips pressing gently against mine. I let her take the lead, but I couldn't resist dropping her hands to slide my fingers slowly down her back until they were cupping her ass. She leaned into the kiss, pushing me down until I was laying flat against the bed. Her hands cupped my tits, teasing my nipples with her thumb. I quietly moaned into her mouth.
Emboldened, she kissed down my neck until one and then the other nipple was in her mouth. She flicked her tongue forcefully against each one in turn, eliciting another series of moans. I spread my legs so she could settle between them. Painfully slowly, she then kissed and licked her way down my stomach until she was finally at my pussy. She looked up at me. I nodded. She devoured me with her mouth, her enthusiasm taking my breath away. Jillian was the only woman I had been with at that point, and I was used to her small, gentle movements. Pam, on the other hand, was wild.
Her tongue lapped at my clit aggressively, and she unhesitatingly shoved two fingers deep inside of me, immediately finding my g-spot and punishingly rubbing it. I moaned loudly and tangled a hand in her hair. "Oh oh oh!" I shrieked, "Don't stop! Oh my god don't stop!"
She smiled against my pussy and continued her relentless licking, her fingers fucking me roughly. The slick, sloppy sounds of her mouth on my clit and her fingers pulsing in my cunt filled the air, the obvious lewdness of the noises making me blush. I pinched one of my nipples and ground my pussy against her face. "Pam," I groaned, "I'm getting close."
Pam hitched both my legs over her shoulders and increased the pressure, her whole mouth and tongue rubbing against my clit and a third finger joining the pounding in my cunt. In less than a minute, I was there. I couldn't stop myself from screaming as I came, my hand holding her face in place and my body shaking violently against the bed. She worked me through my peak, only slowing down when my shrieks returned to quiet moans. She collapsed next to me on the bed, both of us panting. "Are you sure you haven't been practicing daily?" I teased, "Because holy shit."
She laughed and wiped the back of her hand across her mouth. "It was definitely better than riding a bicycle."
I turned on my side and propped myself up on my elbow, my hand brushing her hair away from her face as I forced her to meet my gaze. "Is that how you like it?" I murmured, "Rough and sloppy pussy eating?"
Her eyes searched mine, and she bit her lower lip. "Actually, I prefer it soft and gentle. At least at first. My husband liked it rough, so I guess I was just used to giving with aggression."
"I can do that," I murmured, leaning down to kiss her.
My tongue moved against hers slowly, and I gently unwrapped her pool sarong. Both her hands tangled in my hair. I rubbed her pussy softly, teasingly over her swimsuit, slipping my middle finger between her lips. She moaned into my mouth, her hips lifting to increase the pressure. I pulled my hand back and ended the kiss. "Don't be greedy," I teased, and then I bit down gently on her lower lip.
We centered ourselves on the bed. I slid my body over hers until I was straddling her, my bare pussy hovering over her hips. I untied the top of her bathing suit. Pam lifted a hand to stop me. I paused. Her eyes danced over my face nervously as she spoke, "I meant what I said earlier. I don't have a young woman's body. I've carried a baby, and I've gained and lost a lot of weight over the years."
I smiled softly and kissed her gently, gliding my tongue against her lower lip. After a moment, I pulled back, looking her in the eye. "I'm ready when you are."
She helped me remove her one-piece bathing suit. I let it fall to the ground, devouring her with my eyes. "Holy shit, Pam," I murmured, climbing back over her to straddle her thighs and rubbing my hands up her body, "You are so fucking sexy."
Yes, she had stretch marks, and yes, she had loose skin. And her body was incredible: every inch a testament to the full life she had lived and all the experiences she had, including two unexpected little music note tattoos over her hipbone. I leaned over and kissed her again deeply, exploring her mouth with my tongue as I gently trailed my fingers back down her body until they were between us, teasing her pussy with feather-light touches. I again slipped my middle finger between the lips of her pussy, lightly circling her clit. "I'm going to take this slow," I whispered in her ear, "because I want you to be wetter than you ever were with your husband by the time I finally taste you."
She panted roughly, her whole body flushed as she stared at me, her eyes darkening. She nodded, her mouth open slightly. I kissed her slowly, my mouth moving against hers as I massaged her tongue with mine. Our kisses got sloppier, lazier, but I kept my finger's gentle circling of her clit consistent. Eventually, I detached my lips from hers and began kissing up her jaw, placing firm kisses along her skin until I reached her neck. I slid my finger down to tease at the entrance to her pussy. "We're getting there," I murmured in her ear, "but I want you to be fucking dripping."
She moaned, and I moved my finger back up to her clit. Slowly, I kissed down her neck, sucking lightly on her skin, and I kissed along every inch of her chest before I finally touched her breasts. Cupping one of them with the hand not teasing her clit, I lowered my mouth to take her nipple into my mouth. I flicked my tongue against it once and then sucked hard. Pam moaned, her hips bucking up against my finger. I sat down on her thighs to prevent her from moving too much. With a final hard suck, I released her nipple from my mouth, swirling my tongue around it once while maintaining eye contact with her.
Moving to capture her other nipple with my mouth, I dipped my finger again to tease at her entrance. I sucked her nipple as I finally pushed my finger inside, curling it to press against her g-spot. I was surprised by how tight she was; I wasn't sure if I could even fit more than two fingers inside her. She moaned loudly. I smiled to myself and removed my finger. Slowly kissing down her body, making sure to give every inch of her skin attention, I pressed against her clit with my thumb and started rubbing it roughly. Her moan transitioned into loud, heavy breaths. She propped herself up on her elbows to watch my movements.
As quickly as I started, I stopped rubbing her clit. Her brow furrowed, her heavy breaths visibly making her chest rise and fall. "Patience," I whispered, smirking at her.
I pulled her legs over my shoulders and kissed up her inner thigh, nipped at her labia, swiped my tongue over her clit once, and then kissed down her other thigh. She brushed my hair back from my face, watching me intently. Slowly, punishingly, I buried my face in her pussy and pushed my tongue past her entrance. She moaned loudly, laying back against the bed. She tasted incredible. Lavender, pussy, a hint of chlorine from the pool, and something else unique to her. I swirled my tongue inside her, moaning, my eyes closed. Fuck. I would have lived off the taste of her cunt if I could.
Reluctantly, I tore myself away and sucked her clit into my mouth, gently rolling my tongue against it. At the same time, I brought my pointer finger to tease her entrance, dipping inside once to the knuckle and then bringing it back out again to circle the rim. "More," she whispered, her hands clutching at the bedspread.
I kept the pressure on her clit the same, but I pushed my finger back inside her, curling it to gently rub against her g-spot. She moaned, long and low. "More," she whispered again, demandingly.
I increased the pressure on her clit and pushed in a second finger, massaging her gently with my fluid strokes. One of her arms reached up to cover her face while her other hand tangled into my hair, pushing my face down harder against her warm, beautiful pussy. I obliged, sucking on her clit and flicking it rapidly with my tongue as I began fucking her cunt. Her body rose up against my face. "More!" she called out, her moans reverberating in my ears.
Fuck it. I shoved in a third and fourth finger in one movement, devouring her clit and pressing my nose into her mound, shaking my face back and forth to get closer. My fingers punishingly pounded into her pussy. Her moans turns into shrieks, and I felt her cunt clench around my fingers as she started to orgasm. "Oh my god. Oh my god!" she screamed, her hand pressing against me until I could barely tell where my face ended and her pussy began, "I'm cumming! Don't stop!"
I wouldn't have dared. I was having too much fun fucking her warm cunt and lavishing her clit with attention. Her body shook hard against my face, her fingers digging into my scalp and her thighs clenching around my ears. I moaned into her pussy. I kept up my movements, determined to prolong her orgasm as long as possible. Eventually, her loud, deep moans transitioned into softer, shorter sighs, and her body relaxed into the bed, her pussy still occasionally pulsing in waves around my fingers. I slowed my movements and stopped, removing my hand gently and pressing a couple final licks against her clit with a flat tongue.
As soon as I ducked out from between her legs, she curled in on herself on the bed, spasming gently from the aftershocks. I spooned her tightly. Peppering soft kisses over her shoulder, I murmured gentle words of encouragement. Regardless of the strength of her orgasm, her first time having sex (and with a woman no less) after her divorce was bound to result in a confusing mixture of emotions. She lifted an arm so I could slide mine against her stomach, and then she laced her fingers through mine. "Wow," she whispered.
I nuzzled my nose against her neck and then settled down against the bed. "How do you feel?" I asked softly.
"The good kind of strange. I wasn't exactly expecting this."
I laughed. "Understandable."
We cuddled on the bed for a while. The feeling of holding her in my arms and knowing I provided her with a positive reentry into her sex life was incredible. Eventually, she shivered, the heat from my body not enough to warm her bare skin against the air conditioning. She untangled herself from me and sat upright. "Thank you," she said softly, not looking at me.
"It was very genuinely my pleasure."
She laughed and turned around, brushing my hair away from my face. Her brows furrowed slightly. "You're my son's age," she said softly.
"And?"
"And you're his friend."
"Define 'friend.'"
She laughed. "I know he can be a piece of work, but I don't want to make life more difficult for him. He took the divorce really hard. He hasn't even seen his father since it happened. Could you — could you please not mention this to him?"
I captured her hand and pressed a firm kiss to her palm. "Of course."
Slipping on some of her clothes, grabbing my bikini, and stealing a final, searing kiss, I headed downstairs to rejoin my friends, a small smile on my lips from this new little secret. I still wasn't sure what I wanted to call myself, but I knew I had to make as many women cum as possible the second I got to college. Jillian stopped me right inside the entrance. "Lily! I didn't know where you went. Are you ok? Tom finally told me what happened."
"Yeah. But your boyfriend is the worst. I mean, fuck, Jillian, he is the ACTUAL worst. You deserve better. It is horrifying to me that you let him treat me the way he does, but it is even worse that you let him treat you like you're property."
"I don't—"
"Yes. You do. You let him treat both of us like his personal playthings. And I fucking hate that you gave him leverage over me. I love you, Jill, but that was fucked up."
She was speechless for a second. "I— I don't know what you want me to say, Lily. I've already apologized for that."
"I know you have. And I don't know if I even want anything from you right now. I love you, and I will literally always be here for you, but I'm not going to be with you again until you know more about who you are and what you want."
"Ok."
I kissed her on the cheek and walked outside. Tom looked over at me angrily but didn't say anything, his hand instinctively coming up to rub his throat where I had elbowed him. I smiled pleasantly, laying back on the pool chair and playing on my phone.
Tom left me alone for the rest of the summer. I never told him about the afternoon I spent with his mom, no matter how satisfying it would have been to rub his smug homophobia back in his face. It just wasn't his business. And it wasn't my place to out her as bisexual or flexible or however she identified.
Pam ended up getting remarried after I graduated college — actually to the widower father of one of our other friends, James. I'm not sure if Tom ever felt guilty about his behavior, but I like to think that an example of healthy masculinity in his life taught him how to work through his insecurities rather than try to control women. I occasionally run into Pam around town whenever I visit my hometown, and she is always warm, hugging me tightly without hesitation and asking me hundreds of questions about my life. She told me once about a year after our afternoon together that I helped her feel confident enough to genuinely reenter the dating pool, and I told her that she helped me feel comfortable pursuing real relationships with women. It was still another couple years before I came out to my family, but I still credit her with kickstarting the process.
Jillian thankfully dumped Tom a couple weeks before we left for college. She said it was because she didn't want to do long distance, but I think she was just saving face and feeling embarrassed about finally realizing how poorly he was treating her. I only ended up sleeping with her one more time, but that's a story for another day.

2020.06.22 20:51 ruserioustf GF (21) parents ruined our M (22) relationship (long)

So basically i (M22) have been dating this girl for over a year now, everything was fine and amazing until her (extremely) toxic, narcistic parents started to interfere with our relationship.
BACKGROUND STORY
M(22), student. I have work, i work out, i go to school and i don't think somethings wrong with me(?) My parents didn't spoil me at all, even though they can afford it if they want to. They always let me do my own thing, ofcourse if i sniff cocaine they'll be mad but no pressure on me, letting me be who and what i am.They just want me to handle my own things and prepare me for everything that will come in my life. After not getting the newest Playstation when it comes out, not having financial support of any kind, paying my own bills (health, phone, school etc) i'm jealous of a few of my friends. But after this happened i thank them so much (you'll see why). i'm happy for knowing what i am, who i am and what i like.
F(21), spoiled, spoiled and spoiled. She gets financial support with everything, they even gave her a brand new car and she doesn't have to worry about something financial at all. Not that her parents are extremely wealthy people, they just give her basically everything. And i absolutely love that and i thought that it was amazing for her. (not so much, you'll see why) She doesn't have her own opinion, doesn't know what she likes to do, doesn't even know what kind of music she likes(?) She's a sweet but deeply insecure girl.
It all started when i met her parents, i didn't say anything weird or something. Her mom talked a little bit with me and her father was just locking me out completely, i had weird vibes at the very first moment. And ofcourse, my savior came. Her 'little' brother (2 years younger), he was a nice guy. He was quiet and is extremely shy, but we shared the same interests. He loves the same videogames and movies as i do, we like the same music, it's basically me except i'm extrovert and don't need to hide who i am.
I bonded with him maybe too well, he's a little thicker, and i go to the gym and do other sports so i was thinking: maybe i should bring him with me to the gym with some other friends of mine? And i did, and he absolutely loved it. He didn't have many friends and isn't really like the popular kid in school, so i made sure he had a good time with me and my friends. My friends were like bro wtf why do you bring him with you everytime? Ofcourse, you can't talk about the same things guys normally talk about when your girlfriends younger brother is with us, lol. And that changed. After a while we all got together really well, even took him for his first night drinking, we all became friends and i was seeing him even more than my girlfriend.
So, back to the story.
When i came over, her parents didn't say shit to me. Just a basic hi, how are u? - Good u? - good. And that's it... It was her birthday, i was still on vacation and basically forgot her birthday. But i promised to be there on her birthday so i left my vacation a week earlier and flew back home to be there with her. Meanwhile i injured my fingers pretty badly on vacation, and i had to go to the doctor the day i got home (her birthday). She has a car, i don't so she picked me up and we came like maybe 15(?) minutes later. Her father bombed her with messages where we were etc, i was like uhm chill out? But whatever. We arrived and a few family members of her were already there, so i went to her dad and told him what happened with my finger, and before i even could explain it he said it's fine. And i was like (???) you just yelled at your daughter for an hour and now you don't even want to talk about it?
The days went on, still no normal talking with her parents only basic bs conversations, and she used to be at my house 9/10 times. We had a great time, watching movies, exploring basically every restaurant in the country and yeah, just being in love i guess.
I made clear to my GF that i didn't feel welcome at her home, she understood me and idk why but she confronted her parents with it. I was like uhh can you not? But whatever she did it. After a while her parents were jealous. She was always at my place (because they locked me out completely ofcourse) and her mom even texted her mad when she was at my place literally saying she was jealous that we're not at her place.
Her phone broke, she got my old phone and used it. She was sleeping over at my place and and left the old phone over there. Her parents searched her room (they apparently always did) and found the phone. The phone had a nude on it from us and they flipped. They went crazy, threatening her, threatening me, saying i was a loverboy and i am using her(???) and they forced her to break up with me. After a few weeks they calmed down. While i was absolutely pissed(!) that they have the balls to look into MY phone, they wanted to talk. Long story short, they told me they were searching how we were communicating with eachother(?) i was like yeah ofcourse, because you can find iMessage in my photos app. But long story short, they didn't tell me sorry but everything was fine apparently(?) While i was still mad and needed some time to recover, because they also called me really bad names, threatening me etcetera.
Not even 4 days later my girlfriend asked me to sleep over at her house (she lives with her parents) and i was absolutely shocked how you can go from ignoring me completely, making fun of me at every chance you get to asking me to sleepover with their daughter?? I politely refused and it was ok.
After 2 weeks they wanted me to come to her mothers bday, well, i immediately said i didn't want to. But 1 day before her birthday they pushed her to let me come over otherwise i wouldn't ever be welcome again in their home. So i did! I stopped by, with (expensive) flowers. Only to walk inside, give the flowers and her mom looking like the devil at me saying 'you're too late, you're not welcome here anymore'. I was absolutely shocked and just said ok and left the house. I didn't knew what to say, my mouth was wide open and the only thing i saw in my head was ?????
So i wasn't welcome anymore, she was allowed to see me and she did. Fast forward a week later lol. Everytime she was at my place her parents got mad at her, and they did the thing i did expect.
They made her choose between her parents or me.
They forced her to choose between them or me. She choose me. She wanted to be with me. She told her parents and they abused her even more and more. They ripped her phone out of her hands and opened private messages between us. And ofcourse, i was pissed at them so i said some bad stuff about them like calling them names and making jokes about them. What they also did with me, and i only did because they did. My girlfriend completely agreed with everything i said and they were pissed. The next morning i woke up, i got 42(!) screenshots of our private messages. I got a threat from her mom that they will beat me up if i don't let her alone and a looooong message that she is a victim of me and how bad i was. My mind was blown, i never laughed so hard in my life. I was like are they serious? Did they really just do this? And they did.
So i let her alone. And not even a few hours later she was already talking to me. We agreed that we would see each other when she had to work, she just called in sick or get a day free to be with me.
Her mother stalked me on my facebook and instagram, i was thinking hmm maybe i can turn this into something. And i did, we talked ONLY on snapchat for the past weeks and we agreed that i should message my girlfriend on imessage with pictures of her mom looking at my stories on instagram etc.
She did and her parents gave her another chance to choose between them or me. She chose me once again, and she faked that she was going to me, but she didn't. Her parents told her that if she wants to continue with me, she has to pay her own bills. She agreed. She went to my house and not even 5 minutes later, a long rant from her mom saying that i ruined her family and that i was sick etc. I didn't trust them and told my girlfriend that this would happen but she thought it wouldn't. She came home, while her father was still at work. Her father got home and she told him to change the bills onto her name. He said huh why? As if he didn't knew what was going on. She told him that she wanted to continue with me. THEY ABSOLUTELY FLIPPED once again. They not only mentally but ALSO verbally abused her this night. She ran away, and her best friend picked her up before she was going to sleep at her grandma. Her mom literally texted her that my girlfriend was only thinking about herself, and that she punched her and that it was all my girlfriends fault, that she has to apologize to her and that she is a piece of shit.
The next day, they called her grandma, her father threatened her that if she doesn't let her daughter go home they will tell the whole family that they let her in while corona is a thing, and that she should be ashamed of herself. My mind was blown once again.
They told her that it's ok and she's allowed to see me. But the thing is I DON'T TRUST HEM.
Could you imagine, ruining your own daughters live for your own good.
EVERYTHING STARTED TO MAKE SENSE.
- They only gave her a car, phone etcetera as leverage so that she would shut up and do as they say
- She is deeply insecure and can't stand up for herself, doesn't even have her own opinion on things because her parents determine EVERYTHING for her.
- They think they are right, and that they do what's best for her, but meanwhile their daughter cries herself to sleep every night for months now, all because of them.
- Her mom isn't in the best mental state, even was on medication for it a while ago.
?????????? And now her parents are pushing her to see me? But i don't feel good anymore after months of abuse and i don't really want to see her anymore if it has to go like this. I just want my peace.
Her brother didn't even say a word to me after all this and blocked me. Sorry for helping you and letting you into my friendgroup. My friends (ofcourse) don't speak with him anymore.

We Studied the Protocol: And No This Doesn’t Sufficiently Protect Your Privacy

Tl;dr
On May 11, 2020 the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) released the Aarogya Setu Data Access and Knowledge Sharing Protocol, 2020 (“The Protocol”). It revealed the Government of India’s National Executive Committee (“NEC”) has constituted an Empowered Group on Technology and Data Management, which is looking at among other things the development and implementation of the Aarogya Setu. The Protocol is meant to allay concerns of informational privacy and mass surveillance which are attached with the Aarogya Setu programme. However, according to our clause by clause analysis it falls considerably short of principles of legality, necessity and proportionality.
We would like to thank IFF’s off-counsel Vrinda Bhandari; and lawyers Abhinav Sekhri and Gautam Bhatia in helping us unpack the Protocol.
Background
Multiple petitions have been filed before the Kerala High Court against the mandatory imposition of Aarogya Setu. These petitions include one which is filed by Jackson Mathew, in which IFF is offering legal support. A day before hearings on May 11, 2020 the MeitY released the Aarogya Setu Data Access and Knowledge Sharing Protocol, 2020 (“The Protocol”). As highlighted in our update yesterday, about the hearings at the Kerala High Court, highlighted that the Counsel from MeitY insisted that Aarogya Setu was the best app in the world and emphasized that a protocol had also been issued to address privacy concerns. This argument was meant to suggest that the Protocol ring fences the Aarogya Setu app sufficient legal backing and also offers enough safeguards to people’s privacy.
Our analysis also comes in the wake of the Aarogya Setu app being made mandatory to access many essential services and facilities. For instance, in a late night tweet, the Ministry of Railways announced that as passenger trains restart, it will be mandatory for passengers to download the app. Similarly, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has proposed a standard operating procedure (SOP) to restart commercial travel. The proposed SOP reportedly will require all flight passengers to have a “Green Status” on the Aarogya Setu app.

Tweet by Ministry of Railways
However, as our analysis states (a PDF of which is provided at the end of this document) very clearly states that the Protocol fails to satisfy the legality threshold.
Compatibility with Legality
The Protocol is not a statute, and nor does it offer any legislative foundation for the Aarogya Setu Mobile Application. Therefore, the primary issue of Aarogya Setu lacking legal basis is still alive and unaddressed. For clarity fundamental rights under the Constitution cannot be restricted by the Government even for legitimate purposes without express legislative authorisation. The Protocol is not - and does not purport to provide - any such authorisation. A troubling aspect in this regard, is that Government authorities have said that there are no plans to create an underlying legislation to hold the usage of the app accountable, since the “priority at present is to deal with the epidemic itself.
Underlying Basis and Rationale of the Order is Questionable
Keeping this questionable legality in mind, we notice that the Government has constituted 11 Empowered Groups. Empowered Group 9 is specifically tasked with Technology and Data Management. It is important to note that to the best of our knowledge there is no mention in a press bulletin, Government notification, the Aarogya Setu app’s Terms of Service, Privacy Policy or FAQs, that Empowered Group 9 has been solely responsible for the creation and execution of the Aarogya Setu app.
There is also no reference in this Order or any other government notification about the actual membership composition of Empowered Group 9 on Technology and Data Management. In addition, there is no reference in the Protocol or any other government notification about the means through which Empowered Group 9 has sought external inputs on the drafting of the Protocol.
The Protocol is drafted in a manner, which justifies the centralised collection of data through the new Aarogya Setu platform. It does this without any discussion about the choice of design, and why existing alternatives which exist through avenues like telecom operators, or for that matter anonymised mobility reports reports developed in an open source format by researchers and organisations like Facebook/Google, are not enough. There is no discussion on why existing data at the Government’s disposal collected through hospitals, the Indian Council of Medical Research, the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, on ground surveillance teams, etc. does not suffice in fulfilling the objective referenced by the Protocol.
The Protocol also fails to acknowledge the fact that when data is collected in a primary fashion from individual users, it is of course a more intrusive collection process. Therefore it comes with inherent risks to informational privacy. Instead the Protocol stresses on the need for efficient data collection and sharing. Unfortunately, there is little to no discussion on ensuring that the most privacy-respecting practices are adopted, which are least intrusive in nature.
In addition the Protocol arbitrarily states that there is an urgent need for data pertaining to individuals “to formulate appropriate health responses for addressing the Covid-19 pandemic”. What is convenient for authorities is that “Appropriate health responses” is expansively defined. In fact such an expansive definition is curious since a think tank which supported the Government of India in drafting the Protocol has stated in an explainer blog post that the purpose of the Protocol is “exposure notification and contact tracing”. If that were indeed the case, then such a broad definition for Appropriate health responses is incompatible with the principle of proportionality.
In contrast, all other apps across the world’s democracies (across the economic and geographical spectrum) are only deploying apps to support/expedite their country’s on-ground contact tracing efforts. In India the app’s expansiveness is being positioned as it speaks to India’s innovation. This would be a disingenuous characterisation. Most other countries are taking their time to ensure that the application of such technologies when ultimately scaled are in fact consistent with their civil liberties obligations.
Therefore, the Protocol is not engaging in data collection through the prism of deploying the least restrictive measure that is hemmed in by clear purpose-based requirements, and is, therefore, falling foul of the proportionality principle.
Concerns About Implementation and Possible Mission Creep
The Protocol fails to specify how it will interact with the Aarogya Setu app’s Terms of Service and Privacy Policy that were already in place. For instance, the Privacy Policy already contains a set of practices governing data collection and storage. Many of those provisions are now in conflict with the Protocol. However, the Protocol fails to outline the effect of these conflicts and how they will be rationalised. This creates confusion, uncertainty, and risks of greater flexibility for retention and sharing of people’s personal and sensitive personal information.
We also believe that the chain of command evokes concerns of possible mission creep. What is especially concerning is that India’s public health institutions have minimal leadership even as these technologies are being built to respond to a public health crisis.
Don’t Just Use Buzzwords Like “Necessary and Proportionate”. Meaningfully Incorporate Them
The use of such phraseology is meant to demonstrate that the Protocol incorporates purpose and use limitations on data collected by the App. However, they are far from restrictive. For example, “Appropriate health responses” is a broad term that covers a wide gamut of government operations. In other words, “purpose limitation” and the principles of necessity and proportionality with respect to data collection acts as a meaningful constraint only if the purpose is spelt out with clarity and specificity to start with. If the purpose itself is excessively broad, vague, and evolving, then “necessity” and “proportionality” have no meaning at all, since data collection needs to be necessary and proportionate with regard to the purpose for which it is being collected. The Protocol, therefore, attempts to do an end run around core data principles by leaving the purpose so vague and ill-defined, that excessive data collection can potentially always be justified as necessary and proportionate.
Further, the Protocol’s reference to the principle for processing data in a “fair, transparent and non-discriminatory manner” rings hollow. Specifically, it does not require the NIC to publicly share its data processing practises. In fact, one way for processing to be transparent is by publishing the app’s underlying source code. Instead, India has not published the Aarogya Setu app’s source code and even now, a recent statement of the Secretary, MeitYindicates a reticence to publish the source code before the public.
Excessive Collection, Processing and Storage of Personal Data
According to the Protocol, the default setting is that contact and location data remain on the device and not uploaded on to the server. This default setting is, however, immediately overridden by the next sentence which states that such data may be uploaded to the server to formulate / implement appropriate health responses. Given the breadth of this purpose, there is, in effect, no clarity or certainty on when contact and location data may be uploaded on the server. Moreover, the breadth of this exemption allows for the seamless creation of a centralised system.
In general the storage policies are high deficient and cannot be aligned with people’s right to privacy, or the proportionality principle:
  1. Data retention for six months, without any process of review while allowing for potential extension of this time-limit, is not the least intrusive measure that could be adopted. This is because it allows for retaining of people’s personal data for durations beyond the duration of the Protocol itself. Consider the following example. Imagine someone’s contact/location/self assessment data is exported on daya 45. Then that data could be retained for a period of 45 days beyond the purported last date of the Protocol which is fixed at 6 months where this data retention takes place in a legal vacuum.
  2. The Protocol also fails to clarify what are the extraordinary circumstances in which the Government may unilaterally retain contact, location and self assessment data for a period longer than 180 days.
  3. There is no policy for destroying contact, location and self assessment data based on a user request, contrary to the Protocol for demographic data. The total failure to consider user-request based destruction of such data amounts to retaining personal data without consent and is a clear breach of the right to privacy.
  4. Para 5(e) also fails to clarify whether this provision applies to anonymised data or not. This is important to highlight because the current Privacy Policy of the Aarogya Setu App specifies that the data retention clause is not applicable to anonymised data. Such exemptions, if they still subsist, retain concerns of permanent systems of data analysis/surveillance.
Researchers Can Get Access to Our Data. Wait? What?
The Protocol allows for sharing response data for research purposes with certain specified institutions / entities registered in India where the data has undergone “Hard Anonymisation”. This demonstrates the incentives for why the Government of India has taken a centralised approach. It is less about taking the least intrusive measure towards responding to the public health crisis, but more towards maximising the utility of data. In some ways it also shows an appetite on the Government of India to commercialise or discover commercial applications the Aarogya Setu app, rather than go the path of other democratic societies which are more focused on decentralised models which may effectively alert people to get tested and treated for the coronavirus itself. That such opportunities would be non-existent in a decentralised model of data storage only further supports the argument that the adoption of a centralised model for the Aarogya Setu App is not driven by purposes related to containing the spread of Covid-19. Additionally, it shows why the data retention limits of the Aarogya Setu programme do not apply to anonymised and aggregated datasets. Therefore, there is a greater need for public scrutiny on this front.
The Sunset Clause Misses the Point
The Sunset Clause (Para 10) fails to adequately address temporal restrictions on the gathering of data by the Aarogya Setu Mobile Application. In fact, the sunset clause potentially allows for gathering such data on even more relaxed terms and conditions. Moreover, the Sunset Clause allows for its extension without any independent institutional review.
Most importantly, the Sunset Clause is insufficient since there is no reference to the actual destruction of servers and systems created as an output of the Aarogya Setu programme. Without such a reference, a sunset clause is meaningless and evokes concerns of the creation of a permanent infrastructure of Government surveillance.
Concluding Thoughts
For more, please go through our detailed analysis in which we deconstruct the various shortcomings of the Protocol. At the end we also analyse certain disclosures made by the Government in a press briefing made on the same day, which evoke concerns of interlinking of Government databases and risks of permanent systems of surveillance.

2020.03.21 19:04 festy1986 Tmobile led me on for 5 months, choose this week of all weeks to burn me. Screwed me out of credits.

Long story short I added a line in November for add a line get a line promo, I asked the rep 3 times to make sure I qualify and they said it was not as issue. I asked because I was already on a plan of 2 lines with a third line free from DECEMBER 2018. Not an issue I was told.
One month later the first bill came in and surprise, the promo didn't apply. It didn't stop there though, I didn't receive credits for the 2 new phones I got. Started a chat, they applied credit and told me not to worry they will escalate the issue and get it solved.
A month later the same thing rinse and repeat. A month later? Same thing.
Last month they finally come to a conclusion that the reason I cant get the promo is that I was on t mobile one WHICH WAS TRUE from the start and in order to get the promotion to work I needed to switch to their new magenta plan. Im not saying they did this all along on purpose but it was extremely suspicious. I was mad and said I was told my plan was not an issue and months later here we are. I didn't want to lose the benefits from my t mobile one plan that I would not receive with magenta. Once again they said it would not be an issue.
I immediately receive a text saying I am no longer qualified for unlimited high def video which was my FIRST concern and it took no less than two minutes for that to hit the fan. To t mobile credit they gave me magenta plus with a reoccurring credit to offset the difference and to this point they have kept their word on that.

Two weeks ago my most recent bill came in with all the credits I was promised, including all 5 phones with their monthly credits HOWEVER AGAIN I did not receive the buy one get one credit for the two lines. I get in contact with t mobile on facebook, they look into it and AFTER 5 MONTHS I was told I couldn't receive the free line because when I signed up that deal was no longer active. They were confused by the fact that my lines didn't align up with the alleged dates of the promo.
I once again had to do their work and clarify the year and month of each promo and tell them their confused because there were TWO DIFFERENT buy 1 add 1 lines.

Good now were on the same page. They escalate it once more and TODAY finally an answer. T mobile was wrong, I cant retroactively keep my t mobile one buy 1 get 1 while on magenta. LOL I said, Im only on magenta because you made me switch. You made me SWITCH because I couldn't get the buy one get one line from NOVEMBER 2019 because I wasn't on magenta. Im going in circles. I was told that the best they could do would be to offset this cost with 12 months of credits.

I feel burned, I could get 5 lines cheaper at Sprint for what Im getting here and told t hem that, I could do that known that in a year or two time my Sprint will be a t mobile account anyhow and they didn't care, they didn't care that none of this was not my fault and that I have a conversation with t mobile going all the way back to November of reassurances that this would work out.

With the events going on in the world, I dont have time to deal with this. I am disappointed in t mobile and after 7 years I think this burned me enough to just leave. Hopefully someone in management sees this here and fixes the issues with their reps and misleading advice.

2020.03.14 11:04 AnyaKitKat Entitled Grandma (part 1)

I will be posting multiple stories about my grandma in the future. To be honest, my grandma wasn't always like this until my Grandpa passed in 2012. I lost respect for her since she called my cousins, her grandsons, retards.
I got engaged in March of 2019 and got married in September of 2019 and my grandma was excited. Even we started dating she would go on Facebook and post about us.... AT 2:30 IN THE MORNING! My husband is a Marine and I was in college so we both needed our sleep and we've asked her to chill out on it but she still does it. She always shows up at my parents house unannounced and does whatever she can to get in the house (story for a future post). During my engagement, she would show up EVERY DAY to participate in the wedding planning, even though she didn't do anything. At one point, a month till the wedding, she demanded my parents to buy her a whole new outfit that costed hundreds of dollars, shoes, designer make-up, designer purse, and cellphone for the wedding and my dad allowed it and my poor mom had to tend to my bridesmaids dresses and my grandma forced her to hem her outfit BEFORE working on my bridesmaids dresses (they all almost couldn't have their dresses for the wedding). Then, a few days before the wedding, my grandma threatened that she would come to the wedding in HER OLD WEDDING GOWN if I don't do HER make up for MY wedding, I still refused and said "even if I could I wouldn't, you think that MY wedding is about you? No, it's about MY husband and I, I won't have time to do your make up" my mom agreed and talked my grandma down too. On my wedding day morning, the girls and I are getting ready and we're getting close to me walking down the aisle, my grandma comes in the room to me with her make up Grandma- "looks like you're all set, do my makeup, NOW"
My bridesmaids are stunned and the videographer and photographer are looking at each other confused, I look at my Wedding Planner (WP) to help me and she says
(WP)- "OP is about to take pictures with her bridesmaids, her mom, and flowergirls in the hall and she has no time at all to help you" Grandma- "I'm an elder and this is my granddaughter's wedding, so what I say goes" (WP)- "Yes ma'am it is your granddaughter's wedding and she hired me to organize and plan her wedding, SO, it is actually her say goes, so please go downstairs and take your seat, NOW" Grandma goes away in a scoff and acts so grumpy for the rest of the night
